Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

A masterpiece, both in writing and performance
Revisado: 04-02-20
This is Steinbeck at his strongest. Having lived near Salinas for many years, this book allowed me to experience the local life in a different era. The depth and complexity of the characters, the struggle to find purpose and content, the flaws that make us all human. They are in there, sometimes ugly and in our face, but often hidden in the discourse among the complex figures.
The performance brings it to life in a way that only someone who is deeply invested in a story can do it.

Historia
Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke is feeling the heat. She's investigating the death of a senior government prosecutor, David Minton, who has friends in high places. When one of their own is killed, the powers that be want answers fast. But Clarke is puzzled: If Minton died in a robbery as everyone thinks, why is nothing missing from his home? The answer may lie not in what was taken but in what was left behind at the scene - an ominous note.

classic Rankin, if you like Scottish
Revisado: 02-07-16
Even though retired, inspector Rebus still manages to find trouble. All the characters known to Rankin's regular readers make an appearance!
beware! if you don't like Scottish readers, don't listen. it took me a minute to adjust, but in the end, it enhances the story!

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

one of his best
Revisado: 12-19-15
the story is gripping, the characters have amazing depth and the court room finale is full of tension and twists. I was initially skeptical of the voices the reader chose for the characters, but as the book goes on, the distinct voices help navigate the numerous characters. great book, great rendering

Historia
On the right side of the law. Sort of. Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He works out of a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, fine leather chairs, a hidden gun compartment, and a heavily armed driver. He has no firm, no partners, no associates, and only one employee: his driver, who's also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy.

Historia
In May 2013, Glenn Greenwald set out for Hong Kong to meet an anonymous source who claimed to have astonishing evidence of pervasive government spying and insisted on communicating only through heavily encrypted channels. That source turned out to be the 29-year-old NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and his revelations about the agency’s widespread, systemic overreach proved to be some of the most explosive and consequential news in recent history, triggering a fierce debate over national security....

great book, parts not suitable for audio
Revisado: 06-28-15
as noted in many reviews before me, the book is a gripping, factual account of the NSA leaks by Edward Snowden. unfortunately, the reading of the original documents is tedious and becomes distracting form their content. Nonetheless, a must listen

Historia
Sonny Lofthus is a strangely charismatic and complacent young man. Sonny’s been in prison for a dozen years, nearly half his life. The inmates who seek out his uncanny abilities to soothe leave his cell feeling absolved. They don’t know or care that Sonny has a serious heroin habit - or where or how he gets his uninterrupted supply of the drug. Or that he’s serving time for other peoples’ crimes. Sonny took the first steps toward addiction when his father took his own life rather than face exposure as a corrupt cop. Now Sonny is the seemingly malleable center of a whole infrastructure of corruption....

Classic Nesbø! A treat!
Revisado: 04-24-15
if you like Harry Hole, you will love this dark, intricate story where the sympathy lies with the criminal for once. While I was initially taken aback by the narrator's methodical cadence, I found myself enjoying it thoroughly soon.
