Historia
Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than 20 years’ experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?

Powerful and important story
Revisado: 04-20-25
A thoughtful and well-written depiction of racism in America. Unfortunately, probably even more relevant today than when published in 2016. I loved the depth of characters. Each narrator was great. I especially thought Ruth and Turk were voiced very well. Turk is an easy character to hate- but the writing and the voice acting made him human and left the door ajar for redemption.

Historia
The city of Ember was built as a last refuge for the human race. Two hundred years later, the great lamps that light the city are beginning to flicker. When Lina finds part of an ancient message, she's sure it holds a secret that will save the city. She and her friend Doon must decipher the message before the lights go out on Ember forever! This stunning debut novel offers refreshingly clear writing and fascinating, original characters.

Good YA book, dystopic but with a happy ending
Revisado: 04-05-25
I listened to this book because my 6th grade daughter recommended it. It was a good YA version of a dystopian novel. The lesson is similar to the “drowning man parable”.

Historia
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

Beautiful descriptions but not much happened
Revisado: 04-02-25
Multiple people recommended this book to me, based on my loving “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” and “Midnight Library”. I can see why others enjoyed this book, but it wasn’t for me. Beautiful descriptions but not much really happened. The “competition” trails on aimlessly and never has a winner. I didn’t feel invested in any of the characters. Narration was very well done.

Historia
The Khao San Road, Bangkok—first stop for the hordes of rootless young Westerners traveling in Southeast Asia. On Richard's first night there, in a low-budget guest house, a fellow traveler slashes his wrists, bequeathing to Richard a meticulously drawn map to "the Beach." The Beach, as Richard has come to learn, is the subject of a legend among young travelers in Asia: a lagoon hidden from the sea, with white sand and coral gardens, freshwater falls surrounded by jungle, plants untouched for a thousand years.

Gory wrist cutting
Revisado: 03-03-25
Spoiler alert.
A good story, interesting location and characters. I kept waiting for something a little more supernatural to happen, and that was likely just my faulty assumption as a reader. It could have been interesting if they weren’t able to leave the island without then killing themselves or without sending a replacement person back, or if time passed differently on the island or there was a true amnesia effect once you arrived. I also could have done without so many descriptions of Mr. Duck’s slashed wrists. Richard dreams/envisions it repeatedly and even describes an instance where Duck intentionally shakes his hand in a manner to make the blood shoot and spray all over. Richard was an unlikeable character overall- wish he was a little more redeeming. I watched the 2000 movie right after reading and actually think I found the movie version of Richard more relatable, although maybe that’s just the Leonardo DiCaprio effect.

A female Jason Bourne
Revisado: 02-05-25
“If someone had killed Hamlet in the first act, a lot more people would’ve been alive at the end.”
Kind of a Manchurian Candidate, Jason Bourne type story but with a female lead. Narration seemed slower than normal, definitely play at 1.2x

Old Hollywood
Revisado: 01-12-25
A well-written glimpse into old Hollywood, with great characters. Narration was perfect, although it did feel a little odd to hear that older voice recalling her younger escapades, lol.
SPOILER ALERT:
The twist at the end was a little lackluster. I would understand Monique’s conflicting feelings if Evelyn had been driving the car.

Beautiful descriptions but lackluster ending
Revisado: 09-08-24
I enjoyed the incorporation of art and scenery into the plot. Interesting premise but lost my interest by the end. The characters could have had a bit more depth, their flaws could have been more severe. In the end, each character was firmly good or bad, with no grey area. Narrator did a great job though!

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Virginia ends up being so unlikeable, once you discover she has faked her disabilities for decades and allowed others to care for her, carry her, feed her, and clean her all that time. Yes, she lived through tragedies, but I just could not relate to her choices afterward. She allowed Mary to die, she never found her son, just such a waste of a life.

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Revisado: 05-22-24
Very sweet and heart-warming book. As others have said, similar to “A Man Called Ove”. Characters were interesting. I found it a bit predictable though. Very good narration.
