Premise was fun and intriguing (space pirate- yay!) but I searched high and low for sparks between the two main characters and did not find any. I also think the heroine’s reaction to being taken off planet was not realistic and while I realized we have to suspect some disbelief, this could have been a great moment of intimacy and caring from the the male lead but nope.
Meh.

May be a quirk of mine but I like the hero to pursue and woo the heroine. Not kiss a couple times, stare at her cleavage, and now she is overcome with lust and on her knees. (If you know, you know).
This is fiction. Give me a hero that cares about a woman’s feelings, personality, intellect, something other than just the looks. She is a Dr for Pete’s sakes.
I am not the audience for lukewarm mental and physical foreplay.
Blah

Massive Misogyny

This book is rife with misogynistic overtones and I finally had to stop listening to it because it was making me mad, sad, and a little sick.

The author has given us a strong female lead that is slowly whittled down and carved into a subservient floppy rag who thinks she is empowered because the laird finds her sexy. Yuck. She is literally branded, barred from driving (lest she actually get away from these abusers who beat her up in a bad attempt at “training” her to fight), and injured so many times that if this continues she will just be a bag of scars by the time she hits middle age.

All that said, the world building was very well done, just not to my liking. The real world we live in is more than harsh enough to women, I don’t want to read about and be gaslit into thinking it’s okay because they wrap it up in shifter lore. Not for me.

*Narrators were excellent

The men in this book are hot AF and our hero is Grade A beefcake. I just wish the narrator had been able to do accents.

As an insurance professional myself and a fan of shifter fated romance, this was just my cup of tea. Loved that we have different animals the heroes shift into. Most of the main characters were fun and had depth.

However, the narrator ran out of female voices towards the third love story and the fourth one was just totally annoying and I almost DNF. It could also be because the fourth heroine was like a Hollywood executive writes female characters; crap in a crisis and in need of a big strong man to save her. She had growth but too little too late.

First, from the description I thought this was going to be a curvy girl/fated mate sweet but spicy romance. It was very spicy but with little sweet build up of the characters so it felt more like I was reading someone’s mock up of a short story.
However, the second thing that killed this book/short story was that this spicy book was read by a flat, unemotional, AI narrator. Nope. I need a real person acting this out because my phone’s Siri has more emotional depth than this AI.

Foley artist was on point adding just the right amount of ambient noise in a natural way. Voice actors were amazing and kept the story interesting and on the edge of my seat. Well done everyone!

This is NOT a standalone read. I must be coming in mid-stream because the world building in chapter 1 is very confusing. I believe our protagonist is an orphan in some kind of dystopian magical universe filled with of skeletons and terrible and awful people. I do not care about the main character and was annoyed that she couldn’t see through the trap. DNF in Chapter 1.

Hey there fellow fans, can you help me out?
After raging it up at 90’s metal concerts, I have earring loss and while this works out well when I need to tune someone out, it means Im sometimes just nodding my head and pretending I heard. Well now my GenX ears cannot understand the name of the podcast advertised within this one. It sounds like “Mr Ballin’ Dark and Mysterious Stories…” and Audible scoffed at me when I tried to search it up. (The shame)
Please help if your ears work better than mine. It sounds really cool and I want to know about the little girl who got lost on the trail 50 years earlier….

I devoured this podcast in one day after listening to the audiobook. The narrators are excellent at crafting complex characters. (The archivist made me shiver when she spoke of the Red Woman).
The author allows the listener to easily slip into the suspension of disbelief and be absorbed into a world built on the everyday minutia filled with dread and horror.
Shout out to the ambient sound team that provided little details that rounded out the story; the creak of an old board, the carnival sounds of people and rides… delicious!
Hope there are more to come!
This will be great to listen to again in October.
