Historia
Five Years Earlier: Henry Dunne knows three things: that agreeing to host this raucous house party was a terrible idea, that he absolutely cannot show up to his nursing shift tomorrow with a hangover, and that the beautiful redhead in the corner will be sleeping in his bed tonight.

much better than anticipated
Revisado: 11-22-24
Overall great story and good ending. Initially I thought this was a copy cat of the time travelers wife with how the narration between the main characters go, especially with Henry being named Henry and the time travel concept. Loved how everything connects smoothly throughout, though definitely a bit of a slow burn

The overall story and character build up is anticlimactic and the ending leaves out a lot of unanswered questions. Throughout the whole listen I just kept waiting for it to end. This is one of two books my bookclub chose for October; the other one is We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. It will be interesting for comparison.

Historia
Mary is a quiet middle-aged woman doing her best to blend into the background. Unremarkable. Invisible. Unknown even to herself. But lately, things have been changing inside Mary. Along with the hot flashes and body aches, she can’t look in a mirror without passing out, and the voices in her head have been urging her to do unspeakable things. Fired from her job in New York, she moves back to her hometown hoping to reconnect with her past and inner self. What she finds instead are visions of terrifying mutilated specters that come with increasing regularity.

Rare story that really pulls you in
Revisado: 09-26-24
This book has a slow start and I tried to return it but reached my limit with returns on audible, so I stuck with it. SO GLAD I did. This story has all the horror elements I love--cults, ghosts, creepy houses. For all the gore, it is descriptive enough without being traumatizing. Loved Aunt Nadine's character--I have a lot of new comebacks from her. Also enjoyed listening to the author's note at the end and love how he addresses writing a female character. Highly recommend

never a dull moment
Revisado: 06-22-24
Usually I find that stories like this tend to get repetitive fast; that was not the case with this story. Would have been 5/5 if not for the abruptness with which the story ends.

Historia
The Candy House opens with the staggeringly brilliant Bix Bouton, whose company, Mandala, is so successful that he is “one of those tech demi-gods with whom we’re all on a first name basis.” Bix is forty, with four kids, restless, and desperate for a new idea, when he stumbles into a conversation group, mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or “externalizing” memory. Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, “Own Your Unconscious”—which allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share your memories in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes.

all over the place; barely touches on the plot
Revisado: 02-07-23
This book is a huge waste of time with too many characters to follow. The chapters bounce around to different periods of time throughout the story in a nonsensical way and the aspect of the technology with memories is more of a background element. Fans of Adam Levin's Bubblegum or Anthony Doerr's Cloud Cuckoo Land or anyone that enjoys stories that are long and go absolutely nowhere would LOVE this book

Historia
The great scholar, W. E. B. Du Bois, once wrote about the problem of race in America, and what he called “Double Consciousness,” a sensitivity that every African American possesses in order to survive. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood Du Bois’s words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans—the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother Pearl, the descendant of enslaved Georgians and tenant farmers—Ailey carries Du Bois’s problem on her shoulders.
