Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Excellent!
Revisado: 12-02-22
Beautifully written and researched. Refreshingly, the author knows her equestrian stuff. Not a single, miscue on races, gaits, or even barn chores. The tribute at the end to her late husband, the great Tony Horowitz, was exceptionally touching. Perhaps there were glimpses of him in the character Theo.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Flipped is the definitive account of how the election of Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff transformed Georgia from one of the staunchest Republican strongholds to the nation’s most watched battleground state—and ground zero for the disinformation wars certain to plague statewide and national elections in the future. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Greg Bluestein charts how progressive activists and organizers worked to mobilize hundreds of thousands of new voters and how Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia may shape Democratic strategy for years to come.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

A fascinating account. Beautifully written and researched. Suspenseful too. And the Irish reader was wonderful. Unless you are Gerry Adams or the British gov't, you will likely really enjoy this read/listen.

Brilliant but flawed
Revisado: 07-13-20
Hemingway, of course, is amazing. The darkness, dialogue an rawness of this book are striking. But it’s hard to get past his continuous use of “the N word” in the early chapters. Jolting, dated and just wrong.

Historia
Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, he argues, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws both in our justice system and in human nature. Bharara uses the many illustrative anecdotes and case histories from his storied, formidable career - the successes as well as the failures - to shed light on the realities of the legal system and the consequences of taking action.

Harpo speaks
Revisado: 11-05-18
“Harpo Speaks.” That’s the title of Harpo Marx‘s autobiography. I read it years ago. Wonderful book. Eric Idle comes a generation later, with equally compelling, personal and, at times, profound tales of his life with famous entertainment pals. And he’s even funnier. Idle bounces around a bit chronologically, and occasionally repeats. But I nonetheless truly enjoyed every chapter. Especially cherished the unexpected insights into George Harrison and his time on earth. (George may now be my favorite Beatle.) Unlike Steve Martin, I read the book BEFORE commencing to laugh and cry. Well, at least laugh. A lot. Usually out-loud.
