Historia
Rachel's parents have a simple rule: five hours of sleep. No more, no less. But after six months of this "simple" schedule, Rachel's exhausted mind plays tricks on her. She sees things that can't be real. Like the Boogeyman in her little brother's room. When no one believes her, Rachel takes matters into her own hands. But her sleep-deprived state blurs the line between reality and nightmare. Is the grotesque figure with too many teeth just a hallucination? Or is there something sinister lurking in the shadows?

This would have been a decent creepypasta, but a short story, it is not. The author sped through the ending and left too many questions unanswered. WHY was the a tunnel connecting the two houses? Why do the parents restrict their kids' sleep??

Historia
These people will give anything for the idols they worship, be they rock stars, actors or authors. Or even serial killers. Lori is just such a fanatic. Her obsession is with Edmund Cox, a man of sadistic cruelty who butchered more than 20 women. She’s gone so far as to forge a relationship with him, visiting him in prison and sending him letters on a regular basis. She will do anything to get close to him, so when he gives her a task, she eagerly accepts it. She has no idea of the horror that awaits her.

A somewhat interesting story chock full of man writing cringy female characters, white author writing a stereotypical Black character, and an ableist author writing a disabled character, all told by a narrator they found on Wish.

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss - a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten - by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family. What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare - one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Revisado: 08-24-24
Overall, I actually enjoyed this book. However, it is at least twice as long as it should be and not well-written. There are subplots that go nowhere and add absolutely nothing to drive the plot. The author spends SO MUCH TIME establishing the main character getting the job, then exhaustively describes all the spooky technology issues (honestly that's the majority of the book) only for it to have a short, sudden twist. I won't be reading it again.

Historia
In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

The editing is even worse that you can imagine.
Revisado: 08-20-24
I think this is a classic case of having a fantastic concept without the skill to make it into the story it could be.
I read reviews about how bad the production quality was for this audiobook, but finally decided to give it a shot. At first, I thought the page turning, constant mistakes followed by re-reading, and the coughs, sniffs, and commentary were including on purpose to make it sound like a real script reading. It soon became clear that it is in fact just unbelievably shitty editing.

Historia
To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?” When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay. Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

Mild spoilers below.
Revisado: 08-17-24
What made this book so fantastic to me was the way Malerman broke two common tropes:
1. Characters in horror usually don't believe the person who is experiencing the supernatural events until it's too late, usually near the climactic end. The characters in this story come to grips with the monster pretty early, and the rest of the story continues to be endlessly chilling. That cannot be easy to write.
2. Even with horror/thriller books I really enjoy, I find often myself internally screaming at the characters for the choices they make. The characters here respond to what they're experiencing in totally sensible ways and their choices all make sense to me.
Now, a warning: if you need a happy ending, I do not recommend this book. I should have learned my lesson from Bird Box, but this ending wrecked me. Still, this is a 10/10 book for me.

Revisado: 08-13-24
I know I'm in the minority here, but I HATED this book. I do not understand how it can possibly be considered a thriller. It is chock full of boring narrative about the main characters' childish, low-stakes marital conflicts with an extremely thin thread of "thriller" brought in every few chapters. The couple in the book clearly never even liked each other. Things don't pick up until 3/4 of the way through, and even then, barely.

This is a fantastic supernatural thriller. The performance is entertaining as hell. Just when I felt like it was getting too slow, near the middle, the real story began. Some of the twists were predictable, but most were not. The end was a bit cheesy, but don't let that stop you. This story is masterfully told and the character development is unmatched.

Historia
No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her - and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

Most people think of themselves as “good", but it’s not always easy to determine what’s “good” or “bad” - especially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia, and they have guidance for us. With bright wit and deep insight, How to Be Perfect explains concepts like deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism, ubuntu, and more, so we can sound cool at parties and become better people.
