When renowned archeologist Gav Gendin discovers the wreck of an Ancient starship, with a stasis pod and a still living member of the extinct aliens inside, it should be the greatest triumph of his career. Instead, it ends in disaster and leads to his son, Siv, being placed in cryogenic sleep. A century later, Siv Gendin wakes to a world in decline, a world where you do what you must to survive. With the help of a snarky, sentient AI companion named Silky, Siv becomes a top procurement specialist.

Mostly entertaining
Revisado: 01-29-25
The book moves along at a good clip with a reasonably engaging storyline. The narrator's accent threw me for a few minutes until I got used to it, but then was quite enjoyable.
I get frustrated with "Book 1" of a series because the plot lines are not resolved. This book is no exception; it leaves you hanging with no attempt to resolve anything. Lots of unanswered questions.
Il probably get Book 2 at some time; we'll see.

Historia
Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total. On this dystopian Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands.

Could not finish
Revisado: 08-06-24
I don't know how good the story is because almost 3 hours in, it is 5% si-fi and 95% poor me social oppression and unrequited lesbian lust. I was really hoping things would start to open up and something interesting would happen, but I ran out of patience. I almost never quit a book without finishing, but this one is just too slow, too uninteresting, too scattered.
The narrator is decent with appropriate emphasis and emotion, though her character voices leave something to be desired. I've listened to worse (I'm looking at you, Wil Wheaton!) but she's far from the best.
Would I recommend this book? Unfortunately, no.

Inventive
Revisado: 07-22-24
The story starts out strong, but there's just not enough plot to carry an entire novel. As a result, there are a lot of "action scenes" that do not advance the story. I found it difficult to stay engaged - too repetitive.
The author added in a sub-plot involving a convict and a biker gang that was totally unnecessary but served to pad the story to make it longer(?).
Overall, I found the story to be overly long and not particularly memorable.

Millions of people visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe's iconic webcomic. His stick-figure drawings about science, technology, language, and love have a large and passionate following. Fans of xkcd ask Munroe a lot of strange questions. What if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90 percent of the speed of light? How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live? If there were a robot apocalypse, how long would humanity last?

very entertaining
Revisado: 04-02-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author's combination of scientific accuracy combined with crazy scenarios is immensity entertaining.
l have complained in the past about Will Wheatin's narration. For a novel, he is terrible - no ability to vary character voices. He is not a good "voice actor". That being said, for this book, a straight narration, he was outstanding. He consistently used appropriately timed emphasis and laughter, making listening an enjoyable experience.

Historia
Two defense experts explore the collision of war, politics, and social media, where the most important battles are now only a click away. Through the weaponization of social media, the Internet is changing war and politics, just as war and politics are changing the Internet. Terrorists livestream their attacks, “Twitter wars” produce real world casualties, and viral misinformation alters not just the result of battles, but the very fate of nations. The result is that war, tech, and politics have blurred into a new kind of battlespace that plays out on our smartphones.

Somewhat alarming
Revisado: 01-31-24
Interesting and eye-opening content, particularly about Russian "sock puppets". I'm old-fashioned and do not get my news from social media, and I find it alarming how many people do, and how easily some are swayed. Social media are powerful 21st century "weapons" and it is important to have a skeptical awareness of agents who purposely try to mislead.
I thought the book was longer than it needed to be and found myself struggling to finish it. It has a lot of redundantcy.
I really dislike the narrator - he pauses after every third word like he's struggling to catch his breath. I found it very irritating. I'm going to avoid this particular narrator in the future.

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Tedious
Revisado: 12-11-23
While the story has a somewhat innovative plot, but I found the book unsatisfying for the following reasons:
- There are too many characters, not fully developed. I could not empathize with any of them because I did not "know" them. I was often confused about who was who.
- The author goes into excruciating detail about everything. Unnecessary detail. Extremely long-winded detail that does not by any means advance or enhance the story. I found it very difficult at times to stay with the story.
I will say, though, that the narrator is excellent. He does his best to bring the characters to life despite the story material he has to work with.
I will not be listening to any more of this series.

To much detail, not enough story
Revisado: 08-03-23
The story is decent though somewhat a predictable revenge story along the lines of The Terminal List. I found it difficult at times to get through due to the author's extreme fascination with weapons. For me to enjoy the story, I don't think it's necessary to go into excruciating detail about every firearm, scope and bullet unless it is critical to the storyline (usually it is not). I think I'm going to lay off this series and may or may not return to it at a later date.

Thumbing across the scorched West Texas desert, loner Jack Reacher has nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is pretty Carmen Greer. But for Reacher, the lift comes with a hitch. Carmen's got a story to tell, and it's a wild one. All about her husband, her family secrets, and a hometown that's pure Gothic. She's also got a plan. Jack Reacher's part of it. And before the sun sets, this ride could cost them both their lives.

Revisado: 06-30-23
I have listened to a lot of Reacher novels but found this one unsatisfying. It moves slowly and lacks... I don't know what to call it... a certain attitude. Sorry for the vague review. All I can say is this book would not be my first choice for a Jack Reacher story.

Imagine a 1980s world of sumptuous hotel rooms, restaurants, New York City penthouses, and the powerful men who move easily between these pinnacles of luxury. They are music producers, rock stars, writers, and restaurateurs. They are household names like Billy Joel, Art Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, and Sting. And yet, each man has an entire aspect to his life that he doesn’t talk about publicly—his depression, his rocky marriage, his feelings of shame and failure, his private loss of faith. And now: The phone rings. Imagine the woman who has each of these men at her beck and call.

Unusual story...
Revisado: 06-28-22
... but I like it. A number of reviewers have panned this recording, and I'll admit it's a bit different. Early on, it seems there's no plot, but it definitely develops as the story progresses. This story probably does not resonate with everyone, but I found it oddly intriguing. I almost wish I could get a call from Miranda... or not.
Not the best story I've heard from Audible, but I say try it, don't quit too early. It kind of grows on you.

Historia
A man wakes up in an unknown landscape, injured and alone. He used to live in a place called California, but how did he wind up here with a head wound and a bottle of pills in his pocket? He navigates his surroundings, one rough shape at a time. Here lies a pipe, there a reed that could be carved into a weapon, beyond a city he once lived in. He could swear his daughter’s name began with a J, but what was it, exactly? Then he encounters an old man, a crow, and a boy—and realizes that nothing is what he thought it was, neither the present nor the past.

Long and pointless
Revisado: 06-22-22
Some reviewers compared this audiobook with The Martian. It is NOTHING like The Martian. The Martian was an interesting story, complex, well-told. This book is none of these things. The story is slow, boring, repetitive and pointless. I endured through the end hoping something interesting would happen. It did not. I only survived by increasing the playback speed to 1.5x, but even then it was difficult to endure.
