Different Narrator Needed
Revisado: 03-16-23
I might have enjoyed this more reading it or with a different narrator. As narrated, the characters all sound like 50+ year-old exhausted, depressed women, even the men. The story was fine, a bit simplistic, but I felt no connection to the characters, which was probably due to the poor narration.

Ada promised herself she would never go back to the Trace, to her unbearable life on the swamp, and to her harsh father in Mississippi. But now, after running away to Baton Rouge and briefly knowing a different kind of life, she finds herself with nowhere to go but back home. Matilda, daughter of a sharecropper, is from the other side of the Trace. Doing what she can to protect her family from the whims and demands of some particularly callous locals is an ongoing struggle, so she forms a plan to go north.

I can’t
Revisado: 12-17-22
I couldn’t get past the prologue. The narrator’s cadence and way of talking was so annoying that I couldn’t continue. Maybe this book is great, but I can’t listen to it.

Left hanging
Revisado: 11-07-22
I enjoyed this book, although I never would have spend a credit on it if I’d noticed how short it is. I feel like this isn’t quite a full book. The attention to detail and fleshing out of the story is missing from this unlike the first book. It was decent and the narrator is very good, but I was left disappointed. I won’t get the next book in the series.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Inconsistent audio
Revisado: 10-19-22
The story is compelling, but the inconsistent volume and quality of the audio (conversations, interviews) made it too difficult to listen to. I finally had to give up, because I had to constantly go back or turn audio up or down.

Ignorant Assumptions
Revisado: 11-09-21
I am halfway through this, but had to stop and review. The creator of this podcast is so grossly ignorant of Catholicism, Catholic education, and teen psychology that it makes this hard to listen to. There’s an obvious anti-Catholic bias. He makes it sound like teaching world religions is an unusual thing. Every Catholic high school teaches world religions. He also dramatizes how frequently the church talks about the antichrist which is not a major focus in Catholic education at all. So many things that he states as fact are flat out incorrect. I guess Dungeons and Dragons is also going to be blamed for turning this kid into a satanist. This is so poorly researched compared to other Wondery podcasts that I’ve listened to.

Historia
Celebrated author and newspaper columnist Rick Bragg brings us an ode to the stories and history of the Deep South, filled with “eclectic nuggets about places and people he knows well” (USA Today) and written with honesty, wit, and deep affection. A collection of wide-ranging and endearingly personal columns — from Bragg’s love of Tupperware (his mother preferred margarine tubs and thought Tupperware was “just showing off”) to the decline of country music, from the legacy of Harper Lee to the metamorphosis of the pickup truck.

Authors shouldn’t read their books
Revisado: 05-02-21
I love Rick Bragg’s writing and have purchased all his books, but I can’t stay awake listening to this. I finally gave up and use it as a sleep aid. He has a great, slow, mellow voice with a great southern accent, but there’s no inflection. I will still read his books going forward, but will only listen to this when I have trouble sleeping though.
