An Unexpected Favorite!!
Revisado: 12-31-24
I am usually a non-fiction reader and wouldn't pick up a book with the word vampire in the title. But this one caught my attention as I was looking for something a little less heavy to read over the holidays. I have to admit, it held my attention right away and I was intrigued to read on. It had a very non-fiction edge to it as it feels like it could be anyone's youth. It's really just a story of love, friendship and family. The vampire part is so subtle, yet works so well in the story without giving it an unrealistic fantasy feel. I actually really enjoyed those parts!
Simon Doyle is a fantastic writer and uses such great detail that you can really feel what the characters are experiencing. I look forward to reading any other books he puts out!
Nicolas McGrady did a fantastic job narrating this book!! Kudos to him for using all those different voices, that's not easy. I've listened to hundreds of audio books and he is by far one of my favorite narrators. His voice is smooth and calm and so easy to listen to.
Thanks for an amazing book and for opening my eyes to a new genre!

Historia
When Sky and her older sister Avril were taken into care, the social workers knew this was a case like no other. Raised by unhinged parents who hoarded compulsively, creating horrific conditions no child should live in, the two girls arrived at foster carer Louise's home, neglected, malnourished and indoctrinated. Louise had to draw on all of her experience as one of Britain's leading foster carers to rehabilitate and change the course of their lives.

Great book!
Revisado: 07-05-24
I have listened to all of Louise’s books and have loved every one of them!! She’s an amazing woman and writer. About this one.., the narrator was excellent and did a fantastic job! Especially with all the different accents and both genders. So nothing negative towards him at all. But I prefer to hear her books read by a female as it seems to make it easier to connect with her and her story. Still an amazing book, as always. Thanks Louise!!

Historia
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

So raw and honest, and maddening at what children can go through and never be believed or feel safe. Truly unreal story that is completely true. Leaves an impression on your soul.

This is an impressively open and honest account of child abuse. No details spared and she really answers the questions that pop up in your head while reading. So happy about the ending that occurred and her little bit of redemption.

Historia
In this powerful true crime memoir, an award-winning identity theft expert tells the shocking story of the duplicity and betrayal that inspired her career and nearly destroyed her family. Axton Betz-Hamilton grew up in small-town Indiana in the early '90s. When she was 11 years old, her parents both had their identities stolen. Their credit ratings were ruined, and they were constantly fighting over money. This was before the age of the Internet, when identity theft became more commonplace, so authorities and banks were clueless and reluctant to help Axton's parents.

Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Great book! Great narration!
Revisado: 10-18-22
I really enjoyed listening to this book. In a way, it felt like being a fly on the wall. I’ve always wondered what really goes on behind the scenes in hospitals and now I feel I have a true understanding, for better or worse. I also feel more educated about my own and my loved ones need for advocacy.
Alexandra is a great narrator, and that helps make it even better. She has so much emotion in how she reads, you stay constantly engaged.
Overall, a very well done book…informative, educational, and still so fun! Highly recommend it!
