The story is ridiculously cheesy and the over the top dramatic narration is just as bad. I can’t remember the last time I disliked a book this much.

Silly story with zero character development

I won’t spoil the book for anyone but when the author reveals a “twist” of how evidence of the past crime was obtained, I literally laughed out loud. I’m also never a fan of the cop needs the help of a civilian”to solve the crime trope.

I don’t normally read sci fi but I loved!

I started listening probably 5 different times and I just couldn’t get into it. After about 19 chapters I couldn’t stop listening though. Even if you are skeptical give it a chance. The narration was the best I’ve ever heard.

My first unfinished book in a long time

I made it through 18 chapters and absolutely nothing has happened. It’s been nothing but describing the insufferable and unsympathetic main character. I have zero desire to find out what happens.

A new favorite

I did not want this book to end. The characters were beautifully crafted. The story written in two different timelines was engaging. The outcomes of these beautiful, flawed people was both uplifting and heartbreaking. I cannot recommend more highly.

Fine but forgettable

Not really a review but I need to rant for a minute. I notice how many authors will describe people on their 50s/60s as grey, wrinkled, sickly, decrepit and mentally checked out. Every character who was just a generation beyond the people in their late 20s/early 30s are portrayed as elderly. It’s so strange and off putting.

Not a fan

I have enjoyed some of her other books but I did not enjoy this one. I’ve read/listened to 100s of thrillers/mysteries and I’ve never experienced such an abrupt and unfinished ending. I had to double check that I hadn’t inadvertently skipped several chapters. Truly confusing.

Rambling mess

This book would have benefited from a good editor. The dialogue is all over the place, the characters were unlikable and the plot rambles. The decision making of the main character makes absolutely no sense. Major plot points are left by the wayside - a 500k ring goes missing and the central character says “oh well”? I waited for the plot points to come together and make sense but it never happens.

Very mixed feelings

Lisa Jewel is one of my favorite authors. Hers are not the typical thrillers as she is able to develop interesting characters and tell unique stories far beyond the typical who did it and psycho killer tropes. This book is no exception. This is a very unique story told very cleverly through different perspectives and, in part, through an in-story podcast format.

My mixed feelings stem from 2, not at all insignificant places (spoilers ahead…).

First, the ending is very unsatisfying in that there is a lack of resolution - like a movie setting up for a sequel.

Second, I struggle with the portrayal of the actions and motives of the antagonist - blaming a teen girl for stealing her mother’s cheating, already-married 40-something boyfriend? This man who abandons his first family/children for the teenage daughter of his girlfriend is portrayed as simply flawed but an excellent father? Certainly she must be held accountable for her awful actions as an adult but to paint her as a simple villain is troubling.
