Historia
In this critically acclaimed true crime tale of "welfare queen" Linda Taylor, a Slate editor reveals a "wild, only-in-America story" of political manipulation and murder (Attica Locke, Edgar Award-winning author). Part social history, part true-crime investigation, Josh Levin's mesmerizing book, the product of six years of reporting and research, is a fascinating account of American racism, and an exposé of the "welfare queen" myth, one that fueled political debates that reverberate to this day.

Must Read for Everyone!
Revisado: 09-01-24
This is one of those books that challenge your preconceived notions of who and what a ‘welfare queen’ is. Even if you’re familiar with the true story, you probably don’t know all the details outlined in this book. It’s a book I’ll recommend to others!

Disturbing
Revisado: 06-30-24
The book is an encompassing retelling of a serial killer and his demise. It’s a disturbing account and I feel horrible for the victims, both known and unknown.

Historia
With his now-legendary store on 125th Street in Harlem, Dapper Dan pioneered high-end streetwear in the 1980s, remixing classic luxury-brand logos into his own innovative, glamorous designs. But before he reinvented haute couture, he was a hungry boy with holes in his shoes, a teen who daringly gambled drug dealers out of their money, and a young man in a prison cell who found nourishment in books. In this remarkable memoir, he tells his full story for the first time.

Jada Pinkett Smith was living what many would view as a fairy-tale of Hollywood success. But appearances can be deceiving, and as she felt more and more separated from her sense of self, emotional turmoil took hold. Sparing no detail, Worthy chronicles her life.

The Other Side of the Story!
Revisado: 12-31-23
Jada’s book includes the parts of the story that were incomplete from Will’s book. It was interesting to hear the stories from Jada’s perspective after hearing Will and I’ve concluded that Jada is massively misunderstood in mainstream media. The narrative that has been put out around her and all the things over the years aren’t nearly as bad after hearing the full story (although none of us were owed the full story!)
I loved the book and would recommend it, especially if you read Will’s book. Jada’s had an eventful life and I would read the next book should she write it!

Historia
Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

An Unforgettable Performance
Revisado: 06-05-22
The book was good, but hearing it from Tiffany, in her unique storytelling persona, was amazing. Tiffany has an incredible story to tell about her upbringing and rise to fame. I can’t wait to hear her perspective on the next chapter of her life.

Historia
In February 2014, Reni Eddo-Lodge posted an impassioned argument on her blog about her deep-seated frustration with the way discussions of race and racism in Britain were constantly being shut down by those who weren't affected by it. She gave the post the title 'Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race'. Her sharp, fiercely intelligent words hit a nerve, and the post went viral, spawning a huge number of comments from people desperate to speak up about their own similar experiences.

Race Relations in the UK
Revisado: 03-07-18
Would you listen to Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race again? Why?
Yes, I would listen to this book again! I'm actually buying the physical book because there was so many great points in it. I've recommended this book to several colleagues who have an interest in diversity and inclusion.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
It is interesting hearing the history of race unfold in the UK around the same time as the US went through the Civil Rights Movement. There were many similarities, for better or worse.
Have you listened to any of Reni Eddo-Lodge’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to any of performance before.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were several moments that moved me, that's why I'm buying the book. This is one book I'll read over and over again!
