Historia
Martin Arrowsmith is fascinated by science and medicine. As a boy, he immerses himself in Gray’s Anatomy. In medical school, he soaks up knowledge from his mentor, a renowned bacteriologist. But soon he is urged to focus on politics and promotions rather than his research. Even as Martin progresses from doctor to public health official and noted pathologist, he still yearns to devote his time to pure science.

Bit disappointed
Revisado: 03-31-25
This book is long and did not hold my attention well. I kept fading in and out, only absorbing some vignette of the main plot, but the story is so slow and basic that I could easily figure out what's happening. About what I would expect for a Nobel of this time, but all of the characters irritated me in different ways, and I had no desire to keep reading. Narration was fine, but I'm coming away from this book with several surnames just drilled into my psyche.

Couldn't hold my interest
Revisado: 03-01-25
This audio book was great to fall asleep to, but felt more like rambling, loosely connected stories without much point. I can see how this book might be nostalgic and comforting to some people, but it was a waste for me. I didn't really care about the boy or the old man, and the "wisdom" feels antiquated and no longer applicable.

Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

I loved this book both as a biologist and a generally curious person. I also really enjoyed the calming narration. I learned so much and this listen was a very pleasant experience.

Historia
Imagine an America very similar to our own. It's got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream. There are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry.

interesting story, but distracting writing
Revisado: 01-28-25
I really liked this book overall. The story and characters were intriguing, but after listening for awhile, it was clear that this book is meant for a younger audience than me (mid 30s). some of the language and statements used felt a little juvenile, and it felt like the author tried to "weave in" fun science or history facts to the plot, but this was not done well; coming off as clunky and a bit patronizing.
That said, I liked the original story ideas. I just feel like I'm too old for this book.

Sad and Realistic
Revisado: 09-09-24
This was hard to listen to because of the tragedy of Emily; not just her end, but her circumstances beforehand. They are all too real and I found myself relating to her far more than I'd like. "pressures" from loved ones expectations that don't align with what you want, especially at that age, and the apparent hopelessness.
The narration was great, though, and made it bearable in the hard moments.

Historia
In the summer of 2015, Ross Douthat was moving his family, with two young daughters and a pregnant wife, from Washington, DC, to a sprawling farmhouse in a picturesque Connecticut town when he acquired a mysterious and devastating sickness. It left him sleepless, crippled, wracked with pain - a shell of himself. After months of seeing doctors and descending deeper into a physical inferno, he discovered that he had a disease which, according to CDC definitions, does not actually exist.

Mixed thoughts.
Revisado: 07-08-24
I listened to this book all in one day. As a person who suffers with chronic illness (though not lyme), and as a woman, I can relate to the author's frustration with modern medicine and dismissal by doctors. That said, I disagree with some of his methods and some of the arrogance of the ideas presented. This was a fine story, but not really what I expected, and at the end of the day I didn't really enjoy it.

In Putin Country: A Journey into the Real Russia, Garrels crafts an intimate portrait of the nation's heartland. We meet ostentatious mafiosos, upwardly mobile professionals, impassioned activists, scheming taxi drivers with dark secrets, and beleaguered steel workers. We discover surprising subcultures, like the LGBT residents of Chelyablinsk who bravely endure an upsurge in homophobia fueled by Putin's rhetoric of Russian "moral superiority" yet still nurture a vibrant if clandestine community of their own.

Revisado: 05-22-24
I was on the fence about actually buying this book, but im so glad that I did! Once I started, I couldn't "put it down" or stop listening. Even understanding that this comes from one perspective, I was drawn in and fascinated by this glimpse into a country that we often don't get to see or understand in the USA. I also liked the style of the narrative through stories and interviews with actual people living in the area. I would definitely recommend this book.

Not what I expected. Better for true boat lovers
Revisado: 02-23-24
Way more technical, detailed, and (for me) boring than I was expecting. I was looking for stories, anecdotes, and marine references that I could enjoy as someone who has worked in fisheries and coastal environments for years...but this missed the mark for me. Might be much better for those more involved in sailing specifically and/or that can directly relate to the author. Narrator did fine, but overall this put me to sleep and I struggled to finish it, even sped up.

New and creative, but wandering.
Revisado: 12-20-23
This was a good book in that is was a unique and new story. It was a fun and creative adventure. However, despite this, it failed to really keep my attention and I had to keep coming back to finish it, and because of this, I forgot who people were and parts of the plot. I don't know why I got bored, because this SHOULD have been a book that I loved, but I struggled to finish it.

Revisado: 09-25-23
I was intrigued initially by the summary and thought i would listen off and on, but once I started, I couldn't stop listening. Humanizes the struggles of the opoid epidemic and general drug problems in this country. All that aside, this is a great story with relatable and developed characters. A story that draws you in, pleasant narration, and an overall 5-star experience. would recommend.
