Historia
Liz and Sarabeth were childhood neighbors, brought as close as sisters by the suicide of Sarabeth's mother when the girls were just 16. In the decades that followed - through Liz's marriage and Sarabeth's attempts to make a happy life for herself - their relationship remained a source of continuity and strength. But when Liz's adolescent daughter enters dangerous waters that threaten to engulf the family, the fault lines in the women's friendship are revealed.

Spoiled by the narrator
Revisado: 09-15-07
When I donwloaded this book, the preview of the narration was not available, and I have learned, for good, that the narration makes the listening experience. I will have to read Ann Packer's latest in print form in order to fairly critique her book.

Dueling and Great!
Revisado: 05-24-06
This is the best! The witty poetry of Billy Collins and the presence of Garrison Keillor are a winning combination. The "dueling" is in fun, and the poetry will make you stop what you are doing and take notice of the talents and passions of these wonderful men and their poetic choices.

Historia
The Namesake follows the Ganguli family through its journey from Calcutta to Cambridge to the Boston suburbs. When their son is born, the task of naming him betrays the vexed results of bringing old ways to the new world. Named for a Russian writer by his Indian parents in memory of a catastrophe years before, Gogol Ganguli knows only that he suffers the burden of his heritage as well as his odd, antic name.

A wonderful read!
Revisado: 07-12-04
This book is a joy. I had read the author's short stories (not my favorite genre, usually), and was impressed by the way her characters were written with such attention to detail. That insight continues into this book. I listened to it on a long car ride, and the miles flew past. It is deeper than being only a story of the immigrant experience in the U.S., it has resonance for all of us in our families.
