I'm honestly afraid to tell people I listened to this book. though it taught me that I'm pretty thick skinned. There's part where he gouges out someones eyes and it made my true crime junkie fiance freak out...we were driving with it on the car speakers and I had to turn it off.
Parts of the story made me wonder if he actually did any of the things described...
The main character was like if Btk, Jeffrey Dahmer the people nommer, Son of samuel, and Ed gein Had an orgy and their murder son got adopted by yuppies.
if anybody ever tells you this is their favorite book you should run the other way.

Sasha, a young computer programmer from Leningrad, is driving north to meet some friends for a nature vacation. He picks up a couple of hitchhikers who persuade him to take a job at the National Institute for the Technology of Witchcraft and Thaumaturgy. The adventures Sasha has in the largely dysfunctional institute involve all sorts of magical beings - a wish-granting fish, a tree mermaid, a cat who can remember only the beginnings of stories, a dream-interpreting sofa, and many more.

Revisado: 06-03-21
I'm starting to think that there is a "dimension of miracles" written in every major country. hitchikers guide in britain and Tthis book written in the USSR. though it doesn't deal with a person lost in space but rather a programmer lost in fantasy. This was a very Talking fish out of water kind of story and I enjoyed it thuroughly.

Take a drink when someone gets bitten in the neck
Take a drink when when Pittsburgh is mentioned.
Take a drink when someone screams.
I really like the one with the haunted house. that was a cool mashup of horror.
I also liked the Nasa one.
i coulda lived without the Skinheads last day on earth story but oh well.
The one about the addict psychic was interesting as well.
Gave me an idea for a novel exposing the cause of the event. won't give any hints but it wouldn't be viral. now if only i could write.

Take a drink review
Revisado: 03-29-21
This is the second book I've listened to with this narrator and I gotta say, he really puts in an effort. he gives each character their own voice and sticks to them rather well.
The world the author created was interesting and his magic system was unique to say the least. I get a kick out of people figuring out clever ways to use their limited powers. The writing was simplistic and there were some things that gave me pause, like how often they use the word "Ego". so you're telling me this world has had sigmund freud at some point? that's just a pet peeve of mine.
Take a drink when someone mentions "Ego"
Take a drink whenever they mention "Balls". (this story sure has a lot of balls)
Take a drink whenever someone "curses" but they don't say what curse word they use.

tank a drink review
Revisado: 03-02-21
I really enjoyed this book. Especially it's almost poetic violence, to it's realistic and believable narrative. It's a bleak tale that borrows heavily from other works. The story is basically The last of us mixed with a bit of land of the dead. (There's a vehicle that is basically just Dead Reckoning). there's a bittersweetness to the ending of this book but I think it fits the genre.

Mary cat, Would you like a take a drink review?
Revisado: 02-23-21
mild spoilers?
This story was... mysterious. I kept expecting something supernatural to happen but no such luck. Though there were plenty of opportunities to introduce fantasy elements the story remained Entirely mundane... dissatisfied.
The characters are all infuriating. Ones a deranged Wednesday adams knock off, One's a complete enabler, one's completely money hungry... the only one that didn't irk me was the old man and his life was just kind of sad. And don't get me started about the villagers...bastards!
I don't know if I feel sorry for the "protagonist's" or not... especially since there was no explanation for the characters actions other than little snippets. we know what they did but not why.
Take a drink whenever someone wishes death on someone, when mary refers to the moon, and when Constance says "silly" or "lazy" mary cat,

Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a titanic figure among the world's great authors, and The Brothers Karamazov is often hailed as his finest novel. A masterpiece on many levels, it transcends the boundaries of a gripping murder mystery to become a moving account of the battle between love and hate, faith and despair, compassion and cruelty, good and evil.

take a drink review
Revisado: 01-31-21
This one took a WHILE to finish. I honestly only listened to it because it was rererenced in An American Tail and now I'm wondering about the logistics of Russian mouse patricide.
Anyway I wouldn't say its as entertaining as other works of the time but the performance by the reader was amazing and it was enjoyable.
I pretty much have only one thing to make you take a drink... Everytime someone repeats themselves, absolutely repeats themselves, take a drink. That should get you through the whole thing. There's a LOT of reiterating in 1880s Russia I guess.

Historia
In 1844, Alexandre Dumas published The Three Musketeers, a novel so famous and still so popular today that it scarcely needs introduction. Shortly thereafter he wrote a sequel, Twenty Years After, that resumed the adventures of his swashbuckling heroes. Later, toward the end of his career, Dumas wrote The Red Sphinx, another direct sequel to The Three Musketeers that begins not 20 years later but a mere 20 days afterward. The Red Sphinx picks up right where the The Three Musketeers left off.

Take a drink review
Revisado: 12-12-20
HOO BOY!
I'm glad I managed to get through this. I loved the Three musketeers but this was just so dry! The performance was amazing and the reader really put effort into the voices. I got a few chuckles out of this story but it was difficult to keep track of all the characters. This is called a sequel to the three musketeers but there was only a minor authors aside that references them but that's about it... Not what I was expecting. after the story there's a translators note that mentions how the story was translated in an even more bland way originally because the author was ahead of his time and they wanted the story to conform to the works of the time. disappointing!
Take a drink everytime Le comte de Moray is mentioned, every time someone says monsignor, and every time you wish you were listening to something else.

Take a drink review
Revisado: 12-12-20
For a first book I think his world building is amazing. I'd love to see more stories set in this universe he's created. Set in a world that's flat with an aetherial sun that never moves. Where light is life and is the basis of religion and technology. Shads use of magic is impressive and is a mix between hard and soft systems. His dark and light stone magic system follows hard rules whereas his lightbringer/archknight system seems more maleable but still follows certain rules. (I think he goes into detail about magic systems on youtube.)
My gripes are that he mentions scotch at one point and that brought me out for a minute. like... is there a scotland in his universe? But, then I saw a post on reddit that references Hitchhikers guide and "Gin and tonic" and how a version of it exists in almost every inhabited planet in one form or another so now it's my headcanon that the scotch name is purely coincidental! Also the writing can seem a bit simplistic but that is probably because I read/listen to a lot of classic literature and listening to or reading modern works sounds plain by comparison.
Trigger warning!
Rape is brought up A LOT.
There aren't any graphic scenes but I just thought it deserves a warning anyway.
Take a drink every time rape is mentioned (or cringe and feel uncomfortable), take a drink every time the pro/antagonist loses his temper, every time the lightbringer tells a dad joke, every time the half naked archknight thinks his companion wants sex, and every time someone refers to the taate of food as "Good"
