Historia
When Otto and Xavier Shin declare their love, an aunt gifts them a trip on a sleeper train to mark their new commitment—and to get them out of her house. Setting off with their pet mongoose, Otto and Xavier arrive at their sleepy local train station but quickly deduce that The Lucky Day is no ordinary locomotive. Their trip on this former tea-smuggling train has been curated beyond their wildest imaginations, complete with mysterious and welcoming touches, like ingredients for their favorite breakfast.

No there there
Revisado: 06-20-21
Except for Otto, I didn’t care about a single one of the elaborate characters thrown at me. They seem excessively “made up”, eccentric just for the sake of being eccentric. The train goes nowhere in a twisty puzzling fashion as does the plot. I couldn’t follow it, especially the climactic final scene. It’s a wonderful goal to create a rich world full of inventive creatures, but the players in Peaces all seem like window dressing with nothing behind them.

Historia
Menachem Kaiser’s brilliantly told story, woven from improbable events and profound revelations, is set in motion when the author takes up his Holocaust-survivor grandfather’s former battle to reclaim the family’s apartment building in Sosnowiec, Poland. Soon, he is on a circuitous path to encounters with the long-time residents of the building, and with a Polish lawyer known as “The Killer.” A surprise discovery leads to Kaiser being adopted as a virtual celebrity by a band of Silesian treasure seekers who revere the memoir as the indispensable guidebook to Nazi plunder.

Desperately Seeking Editor or Compelling Narrator
Revisado: 05-08-21
This book needed an editor. The repetitive ruminations, the circular reasoning, the wierd grab bag of material could have benefitted from serious revisions and edits. For an audiobook, the author was not suitable. I understand it's a memoir and maybe he felt only he could do it justice but I found his droning monotone unbearable. I had to speed it up to make it through. Lastly, some reviews called it hilarious. I would call it melancholy, tragic, or Kafkaesque, but hilarious, never.
