A Puzzle inside a Mystery wrapped in a Thriller
Revisado: 03-16-25
The Greater Good plunges you into an intriguing What would you do? conundrum of grand proportions. The question applies to multiple characters on various levels and Tigner sets it up with no easy answers. He keeps the characters and the reader thinking and guessing until surprisingly sticking a perfect ending.
Like the author's other stories, The Greater Good is fast paced and packed with suspense. A twist concludes every chapter and you never know exactly where the story is heading. I really liked the way the heroine's struggles tied into current events and issues. That made me think and rethink what I know.
I saw myself, or at least wanted to, in all three main characters. They were relatable; flawed but struggling. I felt their pain and I was working along side them to figure out how to do good while being bad.
Highly recommended!

Fascinating Insights
Revisado: 03-15-25
I found John's insights into the role male and female hormones play to be fresh and fascinating. Although he didn't cite sources for his claims, his explanations fit with my lived experiences and gave me valuable, workable insights. Of particular interest to me was how so many actions and emotions are driven by the female need to restore estrogen and the male need to restore testosterone.

Historia
It happens more than you might think. One second someone’s life is totally typical, the next it’s terribly tragic. Everything they had, everything they planned, everything they were, all of it vanishes in a flash. Shock and sorrow leave the victim staring into tomorrow’s void, wondering: How did it happen? Who did it? And why?

This one's bound to become a movie!
Revisado: 06-23-24
When I read the book description comparing Twisted Lives to The Fugitive, Gone Girl, and Presumed Innocent, I was skeptical. But then, Wow! Twisted Lives does deliver the action of The Fugitive, the psychological tension of Gone Girl, and the legal suspense of Presumed Innocent.
The publisher even forgot one comparison: Twisted Lives also delivers a surprising final twist like The Sixth Sense.
I got sucked into the action, mystery, and suspense from the first chapter. I found myself rooting for a father in an impossible situation, despite sensing that all was not as it seems. Before this completely unpredictable story was over, I’d been to China and Russian and inside numerous fascinating situations and circumstances. Plus I learned a lot about covert and criminal activities shaping the world today.
The narrator was fantastic! He's got a husky voice that fits the Federal Air Marshal main character well. He also did a great job with the accents and sassy detectives. I'll be looking for more books narrated by Jay Snyder.
I’ve enjoyed all of Tim Tigner’s books, but this was my favorite. I see why it took him years to write. It was worth the wait. I predict Twisted Lives will become the movie to which future books compare themselves.

In this intimate, beautifully crafted collection, Driver writes and narrates with disarming charm and candor about her bohemian upbringing between England and Barbados; her post-university travails and triumphs—from being the only student in her acting school not taken on by an agent to being discovered at a rave in a muddy field in the English countryside; shooting to fame in one of the most influential films of the 1990s and being nominated for an Academy Award; and finding the true light of her life, her son.

Riveting, but not at all what I expected
Revisado: 01-02-23
This book includes very little Hollywood talk. Instead, it's anecdotes from Minnie's life. They go chronologically, but with huge gaps and almost no behind-the-scenes talk regarding the movies or shows we know. Most don't even get mention. We'd be approaching a topic I was anticipating from prior knowledge or lead-up in the book, and then the story leapfrogged over it to the next anecdote Minnie chose to share. So it was very disappointing versus expectations, but nonetheless very engaging due to her learned perspective. She's very down-to-earth.
I ended the book with the fresh understanding that actors are just regular people with visible jobs, and the glitz we see doesn't really matter because the big stuff in their lives is the same big in all our lives, and the privilege of fame doesn't do much for one's day-to-day life.
In summary, this is an intelligent, philosophical person reflecting on some extraordinary and unusual experiences, most of which have very little to do with Hollywood per se, in a very engaging way.

When it comes to divorce, forewarned is forearmed. This book delivers both in a story you won't be able to pause. Equal parts suspense thriller and how-to manual, Tim’s memoir is a must read for anyone who’s facing a divorce with children, or loves somebody who is. While most intuitively understand that divorce brings out the worst in people, and many have heard that separating can be extremely costly and frustrating, few approach the process aware of its greatest pitfalls, how truly terrible they are, and just how prevalent they’ve become.

How many times can you say "Wow!"
Revisado: 12-22-22
I am a fan of Mr. Tigner’s thrillers, but wasn’t sure if I’d like his memoir. By the end of chapter 1, I understood that his Memoir was a Thriller. Wow! Every chapter ended with a twist, many of them heartbreaking and all of them enthralling. This is a very fast listen.
I’m in shock by how intimate this story was. Tigner laid it all out there for the world to see, speaking to listeners as if we were friends grabbing a beer. I can only imagine the courage that took, especially in this cancel culture environment we’re experiencing. He explains why he went out on that limb in the Afterword, but I won’t spoil the surprise.
The audiobook comes with a pdf full of pictures. I was surprised by how much the author was willing to share, but about midway through I saw the method in what appeared to be a touch of madness. He was providing proof for what otherwise might be considered a he-said, she-said story, even though it doesn’t read like that at all. Raw sincerity oozes from this memoir, and the author repeatedly complements his wife and notes how much he loved her, right down to the very last word. He places the blame squarely on side effects from her depression.
While pulling together my thoughts for this review, this being a book that really makes you think, I saw that the first review was extremely negative. At first it made me wonder if the person had heard the same book. Then I saw the East European name of the reviewer, one who hadn’t reviewed another book in over a year, and I put two and two together given that his ex is from Moscow. I guess the dirty tricks Tigner referenced are continuing to surface.
This is a compelling and fascinating story, very well told. It exposes flaws in our legal system and offers remedies to major problems while keeping the reader glued to their earbuds. It's educational, thought provoking and thrilling. Highly recommended.

Best book since The Martian
Revisado: 03-11-19
Winter World is The Martian meets Armageddon meets Star Trek TNG, all of which this consumer found outstanding. It's been years since the last time I had as much difficulty putting my earbuds down.
As a fellow suspense author, I read a ton of competitive works but rarely review them. Doesn't feel right judging my peers. But this book is so well written and so artfully performed that I was strongly compelled to sing its praises.
Yes, there is a fair amount of suspension of belief required, but the characters are so artfully constructed and the tale told with such tension that it's easily ignored. For all 11 delightful hours, you just have to know where Riddle is going to take this book. Fortunately, the ultimate answer is: to a sequel. (Don't let that knowledge deter you. Winter World is a complete and satisfying story.)
My highest recommendation.

A Modern Casablanca
Revisado: 03-18-15
What did you love best about Stinger?
The beauty of Diana Chambers' charming Stinger is the way she transports the reader to another time and place. In this case the time is when authors were genteel and characters used their wits more than their guns. The place is Central Asia, and Chambers does a marvelous job of immersing all of your senses in a delightful journey through places most will never visit to scenes they'll wish they would. Highly recommended for lovers of classic movies and gumshoe tales with international flair.
Have you listened to any of Charles Kahlenberg’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Prior to Stinger I'd always considered Kahlenberg a top non-fiction narrator, but he's marvelous with fiction as well, and his tempo and inflections are a good match for this delightful story.
