Sad but really good!
Revisado: 10-31-24
This was a really interesting book about one family’s search for information on a family member who had been at an asylum. I enjoyed listening to the investigative work that was done. The story was compelling. I felt so bad for the family and the struggles they encountered trying to find out about Julia. Definite recommend.

Historia
Charlie Haynes is an aging ex-detective, working unsolved cases. Obsessed with cleanliness and order, Charlie is a loner who trades on his experience of grisly crimes, and struggles to maintain a relationship with his adult daughter. When three teenagers are murdered in a public cemetery, the ritualistic killings show similarities to one of Charlie’s old investigations: a savage serial killer who targeted the members of a notorious Traveller family, the Boswells.

Loved it!
Revisado: 02-06-24
I was draw to this book from the moment I first saw its amazing cover. I actually went into it pretty blindly. I'd heard some buzz about it in a Facebook group I'm part of and decided to just go for it. I'm so glad I did! It was thoroughly entertaining! I thought the characters were interesting and well written. The plot was unique. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was great! He had a somewhat pretentious way of rolling his Rs but it was fabulous! I would absolutely recommend this book!

Just ok
Revisado: 11-19-23
This book was entertaining enough but it was really cliche. There were several Ouija Board related stories, as well as multiple "person" helping who wasn't there at all or was already dead stories. There wasn't anything original or unique in this collection of stories than in any other ghost story book. Also, there was one story that was repeated with a different title (chapters 5 and 25). The narrator had a decent voice for narration, but I thought it was really distracting that she did different voices for some of the stories. Her doing accents or trying to do a male voice somewhat took me out of the stories. Overall I thought it was ok, but nothing spectacular.

Interesting crimes!
Revisado: 11-07-23
This was a really interesting book. Each chapter was about a different crime. There were a few crimes that I was familiar with before reading this book, but there were a lot that were new to me. Being a true crime fan, it's always nice to find a book that covers crimes I don't know about. I do think it would have been helpful to the reader to have the year and location at the beginning of each chapter. I listened to the audiobook version. The narrator had a good voice for narration and was easy to listen to. There were a couple spots where there were sentences repeated, which I assume is an editing thing. Overall, a good listen.

Interesting once I got a feel for the style
Revisado: 03-04-19
I received an audiobook of this from the author in exchange for an honest review. It is the first I've read by this author, and in this series, so I was a bit confused at first. I didn't know who any of the characters were or what was going on. As it was written in the style of a teenage girl's journal, the writing was a little all over the place. Once I got used to the style and the character of Sophia, I actually enjoyed it a great deal. I'm definitely interested in checking out the rest of the series!

Historia
On Angel Island, the Ceremony is almost ready. The cameras are in place. For Ruth Black and her husband, the Reverend Matthew, there’s just one problem: their intended sacrifice has plans of his own. Huddled around a forbidden computer in the compound’s junk shop, five teenage prisoners launch an escape against impossible obstacles: a barricaded church, the electrified perimeter fence, the Key Tower guards, an invisible wall in the water that surrounds the island prison - and against the soldiers of Open Light of Day.

A perfect ending to a fantastic trilogy!
Revisado: 01-05-19
This was the perfect ending to the Salvation State trilogy! Revelation Way ramps up the action and suspense again as Rebecca, Daniel, and friends put their escape plan into action. It also made me feel so many different emotions. I felt anxiety waiting to see how well their plan worked, satisfaction with several things that happened, pride in the actions of our heros, disgust at the actions of Reverend and Mrs. Black, and the epilogue even brought me to tears. Just a warning that this is the darkest and goriest book of the trilogy. There are a few parts that are a bit graphic. That doesn't change the way I feel about the series, or this book specifically. I have loved these characters since the beginning and I'm going to miss them.
I listened to the audiobook version, as I have with the whole series, and Jessica McEvoy knocked it out of the park again! She's a wonderful narrator and I love the way she does the different voices for the characters. I love this trilogy and would recommend it to anyone!

An engaging sequel with Rebecca and Daniel!
Revisado: 07-25-18
This is not my normal genre of book. I don’t read many dystopian books or teen/YA. My normal books also have more swear words than mentions of God or Jesus. However, I love this series! That’s how great of a world Marcus Damanda has created. This story is so engaging that I, a 30 something year old lover of horror and thrillers, did not want the story to end. I was completely engrossed in the lives of Rebecca, Daniel, Caroline, and all the new faces on Angel Island. I loved the character development as we learned who could be trusted and who was the enemy. Jessica McEvoy was fantastic as the narrator! I enjoyed the voices she did for each character. Reverend Black and his dentures was great! I can’t wait for book 3!

Historia
Rebecca and Daniel have never met. A 15-year-old preacher's kid and a 16-year-old atheist outcast, they appear to have little in common. And yet they both have attracted the attention of a recruiter for Angel Island, where bad kids go to be remade-or destroyed. Agents of the all-powerful New America Unity Church will stop at nothing to get them. They're building an army, a modern children's crusade, in which Rebecca and Daniel may be just the kind of future leaders they need. If not, they might be just the kind of sacrifice necessary to keep the rest of the faithless in line.

Awesome dystopian!
Revisado: 07-25-18
Wow! I’m not normally a fan of dystopian novels, but it was a book club book for this month. I’m familiar with Marcus Damanda from his stories on the NoSleep Podcast so I gave it a try. I was not disappointed! The characters were well written and interesting. I found Rebecca very likable and I was cheering for her throughout her adventures. I felt bad for Daniel and his family. The plot was interesting and I enjoyed “watching” the events unfold from the point of view of multiple people. I did curse the author when it came to an end because I wanted more! It left off at a point that makes it obvious there will be more to the story of Rebecca and Daniel and I’m really excited to follow what happens next! Jessica McEvoy did great narrating the audiobook!
