Historia
Change is coming to Sweden’s far north: its untapped natural resources are sparking a gold rush with the criminal underworld leading the charge. But it’s not the prospect of riches that brings Lisbeth Salander to the small town of Gasskas. She has been named guardian to her niece Svala, whose mother has disappeared. Two things soon become clear: Svala is a remarkably gifted teenager—and she’s being watched.

If we were as tiny as ants to another being, what would they make of our philosophies? The great satirist Voltaire imagines alien visitors who have opinions. Bedtime stories are narrated by the world's most celebrated voices and written with no beginning, middle, or end so you don't stay up to hear what happens next. They're interesting enough to give your mind something to focus on, but delivered in a way that encourages sleep.

Yes, a great bedtime read that was so comforting it lulled me to sleep. But so interesting that in the morning I played the rest to great satisfaction. Perfect non intrusive narration, in a calming intelligent voice. This was a free audible selection in your sleep category. I would love more of this nature!

Historia
Colin, a newly divorced lecturer of critical theory, wants to spice up his life. He attempts to learn Russian, gives online dating a go, and even entertains the idea of becoming an alcoholic - but nothing sticks. So when two young women he’s never met before ask him to party, he ignores the red flags and climbs into their car. Almost as quickly as they pull away from the curb, Colin learns they’re not headed to a party: they’re headed to an abandoned building in Detroit to discuss the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory.

Historia
The setting is Atlanta, Georgia - a racially mixed, late-century boomtown full of fresh wealth and wily politicians. The protagonist is Charles Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta conglomerate king whose outsize ego has at last hit up against reality. Charlie has a 29,000-acre quail-shooting plantation, a young and demanding second wife, and a half-empty office complex with a staggering load of debt. Meanwhile, Conrad Hensley, idealistic young father of two, is laid off from his job at the Croker Global Foods warehouse near Oakland.

Does your job make a meaningful contribution to the world? In the spring of 2013, David Graeber asked this question in a playful, provocative essay titled “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs”. It went viral. After a million online views in 17 different languages, people all over the world are still debating the answer.

Graeber could do better.
Revisado: 08-07-18
I loved Graeber's book, "Debt, the last 5000 years," as it was filled with many original insights. Thus I looked forward to listening to "Bullshit Jobs." I had hoped that as an anthropologist he would address the issue of the distribution of work in a rapidly changing society, with perhaps some helpful suggestions. Instead this book was composed mainly of complaints by white collar workers who found their work pointless. I tended to find them to be cry babies. It would be wonderful if everyone could find meaning in their work, and that is a quest for many. Graeber's vision is of a world where people - having a minimum income provided - would find their own meaningful work. However, that notion tends to be romantic and psychologically unrealistic. As a practicing clinical psychologist for over four decades I have found that it is the exigencies of life that push most of us to stumble upon what is most meaningful. Guaranteed income would certainly be nice but will not necessarily entice us to get out of bed and get going in the morning. I think Graeber could do better!

5 stars for singing bowls only.
Revisado: 06-26-18
The 50 minutes of singing bowls is worth the price of admission. The two hour filler that follows is such a negative that it makes me ill to listen to it. I don't know why it was necessary to add it, except to promote this item as a full audio book.. It does a disservice to the experience. On the plus side the singing bowls are my perfect meditation aid, and I have played them repeatedly. That is why I gave this 5 stars, solely on the basis of the beautiful singing bowls.

Silly book. Compelling reader.
Revisado: 08-18-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This book was offered for free and was a decent time passer - listened to in the background. I really would not recommend anyone to buy it.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The premise promised a modern take on Agatha Christie, and so I looked forward to what that would be. However, nothing held together, characters were not developed or interesting, the murders were mechanical tricks, and there was no rhyme nor reason for the killing of the particular characters, or explanation for the motivation of the killer... Also many inconsistencies would lead a careful listener astray (and not in a slight of hand way - rather in a sloppy author way.)
Have you listened to any of Gildart Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to this reader before, but he was the only good thing about the audiobook. They say that even the phone book can sound interesting if read by a consummate actor. Jackson has a rich welcoming voice that is easy to listen to. However, I would recommend he spends some time with an accent coach the next time he wants to try for American accents. He just did not get them - and they were kind of ridiculous. HOWEVER the wonderful timbre of his voice lead me to forgive this lapse - which could be egregious in someone less compelling.
Could you see Free: Whodunnit? being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Probably. It is about the level of most current movies. I would not attend.

Historia
In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

I returned this book, I was so disappointed.
Revisado: 08-18-13
What would have made The Black Box better?
A reader who created richer characterizations. There is a flatness to Michael McConnohie's reading that kills my interest.
Would you be willing to try another book from Michael Connelly? Why or why not?
I love Michael Connelly and have listened to almost all of the Connelly books - some from audible and some from the library. I always find myself transported into a gritty jazzy interesting world. When listening to an Audiobook the reader is of crucial importance. No matter the song, if you dislike the singer there is no appeal.
What didn’t you like about Michael McConnohie’s performance?
The reading was stacatto and flat. I turn to Connelly books for rich characterizations as well as a moving plot. In this case I could have been listening to a Kindle robot with the same result.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I had looked forward to listening to this book.
Any additional comments?
I think I have said it all. I love Michael Connelly at his best, and am fond of him when he is average. I find his works satisfying.. I was very annoyed that a wrong reader could ruin my experience. By the way I have listened to McConnohie on the "Rain" series and liked his reading. He was the reader through whom I was introduced to this series and the stacatto flat nature of his voice melded with the tempo of a Japanese thriller.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels began with this first hard-hitting entry in the series. In The Neon Rain, Detective Robicheaux fishes a prostitute's corpse from a New Orleans bayou and finds that no one, not even the law, cares about a dead hooker.

Seduced by New Orleans ambiance
Revisado: 04-10-12
What did you love best about The Neon Rain?
I was completely drawn in by Will Patton's warm, rich performance and the feeling of being in a locale filled with steamy intrigue.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The story was just plain interesting but the plot did not sufficiently support the ending. So it was kind of a let down. However the moment to moment pleasure of listening overrode this weakness in the story.
Have you listened to any of Will Patton???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I have not heard him before.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Nothing is what it seems to be.
