They think they are funny
Revisado: 01-08-25
This is a chummy book by chums who think they are funny. I’m going to New Zealand soon and hoped to learn more about the country. Mostly, I learned more about The two authors.

An important aspect of this book is that it addresses serious problems and recommends possible solutions. The experiences of these 4 families are heartbreaking and enlightening. We must do better.

Persistence
Revisado: 01-10-24
I gave up reading this book earlier at about chapter 39, due to some of the disturbing medical issues that arose, and to others I was made aware of before I reached them. Almost a year later, I have picked it up and finished the book and I’m glad I did. True, some of the medical and human events are very difficult, however the story is also deeply moving and enlightening. I also greatly enjoyed the author’s acknowledgments and comments at the end.

The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

Historia
Though perhaps most famous as a novelist, Philip K. Dick wrote more than 100 short stories over the course of his career, each as mind-bending and genre-defining as his longer works. Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams collects 10 of the best. In "Autofac," Dick shows us one of the earliest examples (and warnings) in science fiction of self-replicating machines. "Exhibit Piece" and "The Commuter" feature Dick exploring one of his favorite themes: the shifting nature of reality and whether it is even possible to perceive the world as it truly exists.

Stories and Hosts
Revisado: 07-02-23
Each story in this collection is introduced by a celebrity writer, some are movie and TV screenwriters, some are other sci-fi authors. Each of them have selected a story and modified it slightly to make it relevant to today. This recording was made in 2017, right after the beginning of Trumpism, and some stories makes references to the plagues of the ensuing insanity.

Uplifting
Revisado: 06-28-23
The profound friendship between two very young aspiring comedians, Norman and his best friend, Jax is at the heart of this story about perseverance. Even though they were well underage, the two boys made a plan for performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
This is also the story of the love between Norman, a precocious boy who suffers from psoriasis, and his young, single mother.
Somewhat like “Mama Mia,” Norman hoped to find his biological father among his mother’s four past lovers.
This uplifting story is a relief after reading so many books with endless tragedies. It is highly recommended for an excellent summer read.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Required Reading for All Americans
Revisado: 01-31-23
Even if you think you know the history of America, since the Civil War, or even the economic history of the United States, since the Civil War, this book will enlighten you to the reality, how we have progressed, and failed to progress in the centuries after the war. As I am writing this, Americans are grieving the loss of yet another innocent black man at the hands of police. We clearly have a long way to go towards becoming the nation we purport to be.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

A Kingsolver Surprise
Revisado: 01-24-23
This was such a brave story to write. Forget the David Copperfield comparisons, this story takes a tough look at America right now. By crafting this moving story with both humor and tragedy, BK again reveals the depth of her knowledge and compassion about the lives of others. How she could imagine herself in the shoes of Demon is beyond comprehension. I had tears in my eyes at the end. The reader was carefully selected by BK and he was absolutely perfect.

Golden Girls with Guns
Revisado: 01-11-23
This is a fast paced story of four sixty year old women who retired from a secret international organization where they worked as assassins for 40 years. While beginning to enjoy their new freedom as retirees, they suddenly realize that someone is now trying to assassinate them. This is mostly a humorous story but the occasional casual violence was off-putting for me.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Engaging and Well Researched
Revisado: 09-17-22
The novel is based upon carefully researched actual events and people. The epilogue is intriguing as it informs the reader of true later events in the lives of most characters.
The story effectively moves around in time following the painting of Lexington, the most famous racehorse in history. Racism of antebellum, post Civil War, and present day America is heartbreakingly believable and affects characters the reader comes to care very much about.
