A comfortable couch...

That is a lot like your last favorite couch.
This is a pretty good book. It will be comforting to fans of Ex-Force and familiar vibes in urban fantasy are here too. This has potential to be woven into a great series, the seeds are planted... or rather the unanswered questions.
There are some laughs, story pace is a decent slow build, worldbuilding has hardly begun if this turns into 8+ books.. at his pace with the main charecter pretty clueless at the end of book 1, there need to be 8-ish just to find anything out.
I think it needs a little salt and pepper, there is some flatness in the story and charecters that needs fixed A.S.A.P but overall a strong entrance, substantally stronger than earlier books outside Ex-Force.

among the greats of the decade.

I have not seen gritty epic fantasy done better, or with such tight style. The story and characters building with solid layers from stunningly simple to vast and complex. this is my 8th plus return to the series , and I'm nowhere near tired of it. the narration matches perfectly with commanding style.
I reeeaally like these books, and I am very picky.

Maybe the later books grow with the author?

There are some strong points and weak points. Overall I found it heavily influenced by LOTR but struggling to draw you in as the rambling plot covers a lot of ground without enough depth by the central figures, who are a little juvenile, stiff, and flat.
the writing itself is generally strong, but the plot hinging on literal "fate" leaves the reader AND cast in the dark and blown about by the winds of "fate" all the way to the end, leaving the climax and resolution lacking in much meaning or satisfaction.
Narration is very good!

no real wise Gandalf observations, not much heroic will and wisdom from everyday folk. not many laughs, and the bad guys did not do it for me either. It does seem to tighten up around ch.20 and there is hope book 2 might tighten up more. I am on the fence about going on. A solid 3.89

the action moves along quickly, the author holding the info dump as a big part of the suspense element, and I'm not sure it works as well as it could.

good performance and story. looking forward to book 2 . I hope the author fleshes out the world/ system a good bit more. interested to see the Vista when we get more than puzzle pieces.
