Historia
The summer of 1898 is filled with ups and downs for 11-year-old Moses. He's growing apart from his best friend; his superstitious Boo-Nanny butts heads constantly with his pragmatic, educated father; and his mother is reeling from the discovery of a family secret. Yet there are good times, too. He's teaching his grandmother how to read. For the first time she's sharing stories about her life as a slave. And his father and his friends are finally getting the respect and positions of power they've earned. But not everyone is happy with the political changes at play....

Surprised by content
Revisado: 08-01-17
My son (11) and I really liked the story. It was riveting, sad, powerful, and moving. I wish I 'd had forewarning about some light sexual discussion that my son was not quite ready for. For my 14 year old, there would've been no issues, but my 11 year old, yea, he's very much a child. Just be aware for your own kids before letting a very young one loose. Overall a great book, and a great performance.

Historia
Frances Stroh's earliest memories are ones of great privilege: shopping trips to London and New York, lunches served by black-tied waiters at the Regency Hotel, and a house filled with precious antiques, which she was forbidden to touch. Established in Detroit in 1850, by 1984 the Stroh Brewing Company had become the largest private beer fortune in America and a brand emblematic of the American dream itself; while Stroh was coming of age, the Stroh family fortune was estimated to be worth $700 million.

Wish I hadn't purchased it.

We turned On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness off after 10 minutes. After reading the description, and reviews I thought it would be cool. I really wanted to like it. I find the only way I want to describe it hurtful and impolite, so I will not. I wish I could unbuy it so I no longer own it.

Good book
Revisado: 07-17-16
We found this book exciting and funny. I cringed a little at some of the more romantically inclined scenes for my 10 year old son. They weren't terrible, just a couple of phrases more than what I felt fully comfortable with for that age. I love how it gives both sides of the war a face and shows hearts reaching out to individuals. I recommend this book to others. Tom Stechshulte's narration was easy to listen to and get lost in. He brought the characters to life.
