A beautiful thoughtful story. Humorous and sentimental despite being set in a post apocalyptic world.

I was nervous about it being narrated by the author. My previous experiences haven’t been stellar, I’m looking at you Madeline L’Engle. But thankfully the author is actually a pretty darn good voice actor.

I would highly recommend this book.

Troubling portrayal of women

Rape is a pretty heavy plot point and I think the story could have used a lot more work to handle it better.

I don’t think I can recommend this story as it is written. The female characters are described in troubling ways and not realistically written.

Story Awesome! Performance 50%. Read the book.

The story is great. Excellent story in fact. Fantastic space opera that doesn’t involve a bunch of pew pew and military daring do’s saving the galaxy.

The performance was 50%. One of the narrators did a fantastic job and the other must be related to the publisher or something. Not so great. If it wasn’t for the story and the other narrator I would have returned it and bought the story to read instead.

Why would you complain about “filler”?

This is book 14 in a series. If you have been listening, you have spent over 100 hours listening to the adventures of the Merry Band of Pirates and Mavericks. This isn’t a field manual or text book on space combat so presumably you are enjoying this work of fiction for its entertainment value. This is why I do not understand those who have brought up filler. Could it have been edited down to a third of the size? Probably. But why would I want that? Why would I chose to be entertained for a shorter period of time?

This was another wonderful addition to the series.

I have only ever written a review once before and that was to express my anger and having my time wasted. This is nothing like that.

This book is beautifully written and transported me into a time and culture I was not familiar with. The narration as superb.

This is 100% worth the time to listen.

I got this book to listen to after a librarian recommended it. It was entertaining and the performance was okay but it did not wow me. I did not feel like my money was wasted though.

As Space Opera as it Gets!

If you like Anime and Space Operas this is the perfect audiobook for you.

I had heard of this anime series before but did not know until recently it had been adapted later into novel form. This is as space opera as science fiction gets in my opinion. Large scale space ship battles, strategy, and political plotting. The first part is sets the stage with a bit of a history lesson but isn't too dry.

The narrator does a great job telling the story. I have had great books ruined by terrible narration. Seriously, whenever I see a book narrated by the author I cringe.

Scalzi is a great writer and Wheaton gives an excellent performance.

There are no points where the story begins to drag. It is humorous but not fluffy. The story is good science fiction which entertains while getting you to think.

Entertaining story, so-so performance

The story is great. A lot of explanation of orbital sciences in the same manner as "The Martian."

The performance was only so-so though. Both readers had some really great character voices but then some really ho hum ones. Ironically, what I found most annoying was both readers made their respective really smart person sound mentally handicapped.

I would still recommend this audio book just be aware the caliber of performance does not match the level of writing.

Great long story.

Very entertaining. Excellent story lines. Very creative universe created by the author. Fun book to listen to while r out for long bike rides.
