An excellent portrayal of the human side of the Pacific theatre
Revisado: 03-26-24
As usual, Peter’s detailed knowledge of the workings of the Navy and her people stood out for me. One never knows how they will react until confronted with decisions putting life in danger. He went inside the thoughts and actions that a leader must make even knowing lives will be lost. Instead of reveling in personal glory, the protagonist was mindful of those for whom he was responsible. A ship is a team - all parts matter.

Historia
Summoned to relieve destroyers that are bogged down by escort duty in the escalating Pacific Theater, the Hayward is met with a rather cold reception. In the eyes of Pacific Fleet sailors, North Atlantic convoy duty pales in comparison to the bloody, carrier-sinking battles of Savo Island and Guadalcanal. However, Atlantic Fleet ships have had to specialize in one thing: anti-submarine warfare. The Hayward is sent off into remote South Pacific operating areas with orders to find and destroy Japanese submarines—but with little expectation of success.

Annoying voice from reader

Interesting story. Narrator was annoying - voice too strident and had to keep it loud as she would drop to a more modulated one when speaking as any of the people

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Again Ms Brooks does not disappoint
Revisado: 08-19-22
The author winds an accurate tale of horse racing, training and physical function through a thought provoking telling of the lives of enslaved people. She reminds us how many things haven’t changed significantly for black Americans no matter how cultured and well-educated they may be. As in People of the Book, her going from past to present to uncover the story of modern day found artifacts is easy to follow and intriguing. I thoroughly enjoyed learning a bit more history through this novel.

Historia
Bill was massive. He had power, intelligence, and unmatched courage. In performance and character he stood above all the other 200,000 Australian horses sent to the Middle East in the Great War. But as war horses go he had one serious problem. No one could ride him but one man - Major Michael Shanahan. Some even thought Bill took a sneering pleasure in watching would-be riders hit the dust. Bill the Bastard is the remarkable tale of a bond between a determined trooper and his stoic but cantankerous mount. They fought together.
