Historia
New York Times best-selling author Kim Stanley Robinson returns with a bold and brilliant vision of New York City in the next century. As the sea levels rose, every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. For the residents of one apartment building in Madison Square, however, New York in the year 2140 is far from a drowned city. There is the market trader, who finds opportunities where others find trouble. There is the detective, whose work will never disappear—along with the lawyers, of course.

Excellent narrators!
Took awhile to get oriented, but that was part of the fun. Explained our financial world in a nutshell. Characters and story were as vivid as a graphic novel.
Will look for more by Kim Stanley Robinson!

Historia
In the days and months after Pearl Harbor, the lives of Japanese Americans across the continent and Hawaii were changed forever. In this unforgettable chronicle of war-time America and the battlefields of Europe, Daniel James Brown portrays the journey of Rudy Tokiwa, Fred Shiosaki, and Kats Miho, who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who were forced to submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil.

Revealing stories of strength in the face of injustice
Revisado: 10-31-24
As a sansei whose California-born parents were incarcerated but did not speak of that part of their lives, and a resident of Hawaii for the past 20 years, the vivid depictions of the camps as well as 100th and 442nd in Europe were a revelation to me. Thank you for writing and performing this excellent book.

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

History and practice
Revisado: 09-13-24
My husband has struggled with bipolar depression for 30 years. The book was recommended by a friend and university professor of micology (fungi/mushrooms) to help us find an alternative to conventional antidepressant medicines.
The author shares his long journey of the history and experiences of notable individuals, including himself, of the many-faceted world of psychoactive substances. It was fascinating and if we lived in the San Francisco Bay Area where trials are being run, he could have joined one. Alas we do not. However in future decades I hope that these helpful substances will become available to all.

A fascinating and engaging love story of forests
Revisado: 06-23-24
This book added much depth to my understanding of forests and trees - I will never look at them in the same way again. The reader’s charming delivery kept me going, even in the saddest chapter about the human ignorance and unintended abuse of urban forests. . Thank you!

Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Historia
Likened to the works of Faulkner and Dickens when it was first published 20 years ago, this extraordinarily accomplished debut novel is a brilliantly plotted story of forbidden love and piercing political drama, centered on the tragic decline of an Indian family in the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India. Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, the twins Rahel and Esthappen fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family.

Historia
Joe Allston is a retired literary agent who is, in his own words, "killing time before time gets around to killing me." His parents and his only son are long dead, leaving him with neither ancestors nor descendants, tradition nor ties. His job, trafficking the talent of others, had not been his choice. He passes through life as a spectator. But a postcard from a friend causes him to return to the journals of a trip he had taken years before.

Historia
Collingwood Ingram - known as “Cherry” for his defining passion - was born in 1880 and lived until he was a hundred, witnessing a fraught century of conflict and change. Visiting Japan in 1902 and again in 1907, he fell in love with the country’s distinctive cherry blossoms, or sakura, and brought back hundreds of cuttings with him to England, where he created a garden of cherry varieties. On a 1926 trip to Japan to search for new specimens, Ingram was shocked to find a dramatic decline in local cherry diversity.
