Historia
Author Vitale Buford spent nearly three decades of her life in the web of perfection. She was praised for being an "easy child", "pretty", and "self-motivated", so that's what she tried to be. Her need for perfection and outside success was coupled with her body-image obsession. It was also a distraction from the pain of abandonment and loneliness she experienced in her childhood. When she tied her self-worth to her external success and her appearance, her addiction to perfection was born.

Listened to over and over again BUT

LOVED this book. One of my favorites, but a few things I wasn’t a fan of is that author talked about being selfish and not caring about others when she was under the influence of stimulants ..which is what us addicts do, BUT when V was in rehab and received a letter from T saying HE couldn’t get over what she has done to him.. which author admits herself was hurtful & awful to say the least…
She had deemed him a completely selfish human being for him wanting to process what has happened to him and the hurt that was also done to him as a result of her addiction .
Must he forget all that was done in the throws of addiction like it never happened and move on bc V is finally in rehab and doing the deep soul work? That didn’t make sense to me, there seemed to be a double standard. I say this with love.. I really am proud of V and all she overcame but there seems to be more room to grow in self awareness and the use of defense mechanisms.
Also there seems to be a lack of self awareness in her other relationship with J and that although his controlling and abusive words and behavior are NOT OK that they seemed to be coming from a place of fear of abandonment too.. bc he knew the start of their relationship was done with deception and hiding and cheating so he was paranoid the same would be done to him.
I was shocked that author just smacked the label of “psychopath” on him as if is not a serious mental health issue and disease that is already misunderstood in this generation. Just because he reacted in a poor manner does not make this man a psychopath…
