Detailed, Captivating, Page Turner!

This is one of the very best and the most riveting true crime novels I’ve ever read. I’ve enjoyed Orth’s articles in Vanity Fair over the years but this is the first book of hers I’ve read.
It will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will learn so much about human psychology and sociopathy. Orth takes us as close as it is humanly possible to get into the mind of the young killer, Cunanen (sp?), and into the mileau he came from, lived in, and aspired to be in.
It is a horrific, sordid tale and her book is well-titled. One thinks of how a different environment and a different upbringing might have made a world of difference in how this ambitious young man might have turned out.
I highly recommend it. The made for TV series was also brilliant.

The most eloquent diagnosis of America’s ills by her greatest observer!

Those of us who share with Jews “the Hebraic respect for the written word” will revel not only in the sheer beauty of Hedges command of the English language, but also his perspicaciousness and intellectual brilliance. Hedges opens a window onto modern day American culture that few members of the “chattering class” ever glimpse.
This is a must read for all Americans who seek to understand and perhaps, improve our culture and our country and for those non-Americans who seek to put the glitz, the greed, the vulgarity, and the violence of America into the context of a late-stage empire.

I listened for more than one hour. Then, I looked at my iPhone to see that I am on Chapter 30! Huh? The instructions, (in English), say to listen to one chapter per day, suggesting that after each chapter there are instructions, exercises, etc. Not so.
I listened straight through and there was, at least to my ears, no clear ending of one chapter or beginning of another.
