stonishingly irrational ideas are spreading. Covid denial persists in the face of overwhelming evidence. Anti-vaxxers compromise public health. Conspiracy thinking hijacks minds and incites mob violence. Toxic partisanship is cleaving nations, and climate denial has pushed our planet to the brink. Meanwhile, American Nazis march openly in the streets, and Flat Earth theory is back. What the heck is going on? Why is all this happening, and why now? More important, what can we do about it?

Narrator and punctuation
Revisado: 06-05-21
This book is great; really interesting and engaging. I found myself pausing what was just said to process the idea. So what is my problem? The narrator has a nasty habit of running over full stops. That sounds petty - I'm sorry. Full stops (periods) are an important part of writing, speech, storytelling and yes, narration. The brilliant work that Andy Norman has done writing this book is severely hampered by this rookie mistake. Following is my review with the punctuation removed...

Fourteen-year-old Greg Dixon is living a nightmare. Attending boarding school outside of Boston, he is separated from his family when a pandemic strikes. His classmates and teachers are dead, rotting in a dormitory-turned-morgue steps from his room. The nights are getting colder, and his food has run out. The last message from his father is to get away from the city and to meet at his grandparents' town in remote New Hampshire.

Booooring!
Revisado: 04-10-20
Like Little House on the Prarie but with fewer, less interesting characters. To say that the author didn't really milk the whole pandemic thing is the understatement of the year. Most of the reader's time is taken up with stories of finding a lost dog.... Deciding which house would be better for winter.... Young teenagers going fishing and remaining extremely innocent. All very heart-warming stuff if that is your thing, but I found it BOOOORING!!!

Historia
Alex Lomax is the one and only private eye working the mean streets of New Klondike, the Martian frontier town that sprang up 40 years ago after Simon Weingarten and Denny O’Reilly discovered fossils on the Red Planet. Back on Earth, where anything can be synthesized, the remains of alien life are the most valuable of all collectibles, so shiploads of desperate treasure hunters stampeded to Mars in the Great Martian Fossil Rush.

Sawyer's Dud?
Revisado: 04-03-19
I love Robert J Sawyer so I got this book despite some bad reviews. It was a dud.
I think Sawyer was - valiantly - trying out a new genre, to which he is not well suited. The protagonist is a tough guy who carries a gun but is sloppy, dumb and clumsy in what spy novels might call tradecraft. The story wandered around aimlessly for most of the book and then to top it off, the narrator's timing was awful.
RJS is such a great writer. I just don't understand why his publishers would let him put this out there. Why not just shelve it if it's not very good?

Summary: 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson: An Antidote to Chaos (Disclaimer: This is NOT the original book. If you’re looking for the original book, it is available from Amazon and Audible.) Called “one of the most important thinkers to emerge on the world stage for many years,” by The Spectator, Jordan B. Peterson's 12 Rules for Life is a truly thought-provoking read. How should we live in the modern world? Peterson aims to answer this question using his unique blend of ancient traditions, religion and scientific research.

Adolescent all American rubbish
Revisado: 05-23-18
I got this book because I enjoyed another title by the same author. This must have been written at the start of his career - maybe when he was a sixteen year old boy with a gun fetish?
If this was a movie, it would have gone straight to VCR, Blockbuster would reluctantly buy one copy and then go out of business.

Bible Stories
Revisado: 05-20-18
This book has been written by a Christian, for other Christians. It offers advice using Bible stories as a framework. This needs to be made clear in the title or blurb as the material is irrelevant for non Christians - that is, most people.

Historia
Captain John "Black Jack" Geary's legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic "last stand" in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.
Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance's one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic "Black Jack" legend.

More like a report than a story.
Revisado: 12-16-17
Any additional comments?
Flat characters with no back story. The author gave me no reason what ever to care about these 'people'. So many times I was left thinking, this is a military report. Very little depth or character development. Well, to be honest this bad review is only relevant for the first half of the book. I gave up in frustration and will seek a refund.

Historia
In a world full of super powers, Felix has a pretty crappy one. He has the ability to modify any item he owns. To upgrade anything. Sounds great on paper. Almost like a video game. Except that the amount of power it takes to actually change, modify, or upgrade anything worthwhile is beyond his abilities. With that in mind, Felix settled into a normal life. A normal job. His entire world changes when the city he lives in is taken over by a super villain. Becoming a country of one city. A city state.
