Historia
On her sixtieth birthday, a woman commits suicide. When the case lands on Detective Carl Mørck’s desk, he can’t imagine what this has to do with Department Q, Copenhagen’s cold cases division since the cause of death seems to be clear. But his superior, Marcus Jacobsen, is convinced that this is not in fact a suicide, but a murder related to an unsolved case that has been plaguing him since 1988.

Good but different?
Revisado: 11-03-22
This is an interesting departure to the department Q library. It has all the usual tropes but it seems to be more of a usual police procedure with the one added twist of Karl being investigated for an old crime. I don't know if it's because they have moved out of their usual basement offices or if they have become successful enough that they're being noticed, but this one is pretty much straightforward without psychotic breakdowns, figuring out domestic situations, marital problems and the usual quirks that run through the past stories. It's still a good story well written and the characters hold up but it's a little less department Q'ie than it has been in the past.

Mad Max in Texas
Revisado: 04-10-22
This is one of those books that you enjoy, although you find almost everything wrong with it. Sort of like the Mad Max movies, you enjoy them, but you’re not sure why. The writing leaves much to imagination, the plot has many holes, and there is pretty much no character development. In spite of these seemingly major issues it’s still a fun listen and well worth the time. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out who’s who and what the motivation is for doing what they’re doing but don’t let that stop you, you’ll pick it up as you go along. All of that could’ve been handled better, but with a little work you can overcome it. I put the fault of this on both the writer and the narrator, more about this later. This is a book that feels very familiar you feel like you’ve covered this ground before, because you have, it’s nothing new but it would’ve been nice to have it fleshed out a bit more and taken into some new territory.
As to the narration, having heard some of the other work by this narrator, for some reason this book had a softer more lilting sound to it. That is fine, but of all the books I would feel that is the best tone, a book dealing with a dystopian bounty hunter does not seem like the best fit. This is a personal taste issue. Otherwise the narration seemed fine although a little flat.
All and all this was a fun listen definitely worth the money and the time!

Revisado: 11-25-21
I kind of expected more out of this book. Much of what she talks about in this book I had already learned from other sources. There isn't a whole lot new, if one is aware of the running literature. It just feels like the book is a little on the incomplete side. Because she hasn't run marathons, nor has she trained for them, that seems to be a hole in the book that many people would like to know about. The book is fine, but definitely not a complete book delving into the subject. I do feel that the performance is excellent and worth a listen for that alone.

A "peach" of a book
Revisado: 11-25-21
This is the type of book that makes it all worthwhile! Yes, it's a bit simplistic but given the audience that it's written for that is a requirement. The only thing that I can find fault with the book is that the ending is just a little too neat, but that may be my problem. The characters are believable and the storyline is good and believable. I would definitely recommend this book to adults and young readers alike. It runs the gamut of emotions and nothing is entirely easy. The family interacts in a in a realistic and understandable way and overcomes problems to a satisfying conclusion. It is well written and definitely worth the time to delve into.
I need to call out the narrator, Lou Banks, for the incredible job she did, the voices she gave the characters are spot on. The interpretation and emotion are excellent I think she has outdone herself with this book. It is definitely well worth the listen for both adults and young readers. I cannot recommend it highly enough!! Definitely worth a listen!

A somber story that needed more energy.
Revisado: 08-29-21
First off I have to say I love this series! The people that they have chosen to follow have been great and the way they have gone about it is nothing less than, shall I say it, "Genius!" To my ear this one stands out both in the writing and the performance it seems tired, not bad but just low energy. It's a hard subject to cover, a person snuffed out at the beginning of their life by an unspeakable evil in the world is not an easy thing to write about. This is not to say it is not worth sharing with your little ones, because it most definitely is, but compared to the other books in the series it is just lower energy.
It felt that way in the performance also, the sparkle that was there in the other books is not there in this one. It felt tired, it was still good, and still worth a listen but the energy is lower.

It's just missing a happy ending
Revisado: 06-27-21
This is such a great series! This is another feather in their cap. The ending of the story sometimes gets more airplay then how hard she had to work to become who she was. It's a great story, and it is nicely put together. Especially given that the ending is unknown. It was well handled. It stressed her struggles in her early life and her early successes. There's no way of getting around it, she was an amazing person and this book did a good job of pointing that out. The performance was exceptional, strong, yet light, and with the sure hand of a seasoned professional. The lightness and airiness matched the sense of flying. Bravo to the series "Inspired Inner Genius" and to the narrator "Lu Banks."

I am not a horse person but..
Revisado: 06-27-21
OK, I did not go through a horse phase, I did however, spend a few summers on a working ranch in western Colorado. During those summers I got to know a few horses very well, I also got to know where the low hanging branches were when they tried scrape me off. I also got to know how hard the ground was when they bucked me off, and how cold the mountain streams were when they decided to roll with me in the middle of them. In spite of that, I found this book about these horses delightful! It was well written and definitely geared toward that time in most young girls lives (Maybe guys? But mostly girls.) when horses take over. The story is not too complex, just enough to hold the attention and keep the moral compass. I think the performance was one of the best, upbeat and right on tempo for the material. This is one of the rare occasions when it feels like the author and the narrator are a perfect fit. I would love to see more from both of these artists!

Revisado: 06-27-21
I'm so glad that "Inspired Inner Genius" decided to do this book because Ada Lovelace does not always get the credit that she deserves. It is nicely written for the age level that it is intended. It is easy to understand and yet still challenging for those growing young minds.I think that the definitions of the words at the end is a priceless touch. I think that the narrator of this book deserves a bit of credit for the clear and concise way that she read the material. I'm not too familiar with her but she seems like a definite up-and-coming star. More power to her! And the whole "Inspired Inner Genius" Book series. I'm looking forward to all of them!

There lies the truth, Maybe?
Revisado: 04-27-21
I am not one that usually listens to this genre which means you can either stop reading now or continue on depending on which camp you fall into! I did find this book well written although a bit on the short side. The action was well put together but it was a bit short on any character development and given the length of the book that is understandable. The characters were minimal, but clear it would have been nice to have them fleshed out a little bit more and have a bit more back story to make them more three dimensional. All of this is contingent upon this being a longer book which it simply is not. In the links of the book it does as well as it can. The main characters are believable and the action is also believable. It’s a fun but short read, remember the genre were talking about so don’t be surprised about adult descriptions, even though they are minimal. For my taste maybe a little to minimal, wink, wink, nod, nod.
I have to comment on narrator, who’s seems to be an up-and-coming talent! I knew nothing of her in the "book world" before her last project. Now she seems to have a certain presence on the ”inter-webs” (My my!) (I’m not sure I would show her pictures to your wife.) But she does have a wonderful voice! On this book it is almost too good. It is flawless! Never a stumble, never a breath intake and never a hitch. As near as I can figure out she seems to be starting out in this profession but already seems to of mastered many of the skills required. Not only does she have a great voice and seems to have had a bit of training to go with it, but you also brings certain amount of passion to her performance. Being the amateur that I am this is where I see room for growth, I would love to see her put more color into her readings, if the authors would allow. Again this is personal taste, and something that is extremely hard to do. I’m looking forward to other projects that this narrator will be involved in.

Short And Sassy
Revisado: 04-19-21
I had some time in between projects and was looking for a quick read. For some reason I came across this title and author. The author was new to me as well as the narrator. But for some reason I decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I was not disappointed! The reason that I did not give it a higher rating is because it is short. It is an “in-between” piece of work. It doesn’t have a satisfying conclusion, but I am reasonably sure that it will in a future work, which I am looking forward to, it will. Think of it as being “The Empire Strikes Back” in the original Star Wars trilogy good, but by itself not particularly fulfilling. The writing hits all the important points for this sort of genre, the characters are easy to recognize, the plot-line is simple and the pace is upbeat. It doesn’t talk down to the reader it is just an easy read. Which sometimes is all you want!
Now to the narrator, this was a new narrator to me and doing a quick Google search did not turn up any particular hits so I’m assuming she is relatively new to the trade. If that’s the case, keep her name in mind because I think she’s going places! Her voice is sweet but not cloyingly so. It is very smooth and very easy to listen too. The one thing that I would fault her for, is that she’s almost too good! We don’t have a chance to learn anything about her and relax knowing that she is talking with us. But that’s a minor complaint and it is something that is so hard to do that I’m sure she will do with time! I’m looking forward to listening to more books that she does and following her growth and experience.
All in all, a good experience! I’m just faulting it for the shortness of the book and the transitory nature of the story! I’m sure she will address both issues! But otherwise I am very happily satisfied! I think both the author and the narrator make a good team and watch for more output from them both.
