Angriest, gayest fantasy you'll ever read.
Revisado: 02-03-25
Ringil Eskiath is such a badass! taking the typical war weary macho swordsman and hero and making him gay in a homophobic world, and really really angry about it is incredibly satisfying.

Historia
The Shadow of the Torturer is the first volume in the four-volume epic, the tale of a young Severian, an apprentice to the Guild of Torturers on the world called Urth, exiled for committing the ultimate sin of his profession - showing mercy towards his victim.
Gene Wolfe's "The Book of the New Sun" is one of speculative fiction's most-honored series. In a 1998 poll, Locus Magazine rated the series behind only "The Lord of the Rings" and The Hobbit as the greatest fantasy work of all time.

Amazing story with no ending.
Revisado: 09-12-20
Don't make the mistake of finishing this amazing "book" without buying the second one. This story is riveting, nuanced, and complex, but there is no denouement to be had within the first volume whatsoever. the story just pauses. you really need to read this series altogether and I'm stuck on the edge of my seat without a credit to continue right now.
if you pick up book one, be prepared to pick them all up in a row. buy the next book towards the end of your current one or you'll be sorry you can't keep going.

Some of the best grimdark out there.
Revisado: 06-25-19
I read this book because I ran out of Abercrombie's First Law World to read, and it did not disappoint. If you like Abercrombie's style but want to see it done with a few twists, read this series. if you don't know who Abercrombie is, read First Law Trilogy and then read this series.
Alex Marshall is a master of dramatic irony, ultraviolence, and the complexities of human behavior. This series has some of the best characters and relationships in epic fantasy, even if most of them are totally irredeemable scumbag, drug addicts, and murderers.
Chock full of washed up old villains trying to do wrong right, a system of creepy ass devil magic, an ecosystem of insects and arachnids that get you high if they don't kill you, and a grim cynical political economy that demonstrates how religious institutions sometimes get wrong even what they get right, this series is a bittersweet, fun, trope-defying heartbreak from start to finish.

Exhilirating read.
Revisado: 04-14-19
This book was fantastic. I want to play this video game. i want to play D&D in this world. i want to read the sequel. the story was very surprising and unpredictable for being an homage to fantasy gaming and fantasy tropes. the main character is relatable and endearing, especially for an aromantic antisocial introvert. The tension and pressures on the story feel immense and ever present. even during the brief periods of rest and normalcy for the characters, the immense gravity of the larger plot is always pressing down on the character and the reader with more urgency than it seems can be handled. The ending was very satisfying and Nick Podehl was amazing as usual. I'm so glad that I discovered this great series

An Enthralling Fantasy Debut
Revisado: 06-02-17
Dawn of Wonder is one of the most exciting fantasy novels I've read.
Unlike many epic fantasy series, this is a first installment that engages the reader right from the start, bringing character's to life and connecting them emotionally to the reader while ratcheting up the palpable tension that keeps you glued to the story through the first act and beyond.
This book is so well-paced, the characters so real and deep, the plot so intriguing, the action so rewarding, the audio narration so alive, that it may just be a perfect novel, and it's definitely an amazing way to launch a new fantasy series.
I cannot gush enough about how well done this book is. I'm emotionally invested and I cannot wait to read more!
