Historia
"The People of the Abyss" (1903) is a work by Jack London about life in the East End of London in 1902. He wrote this first-hand account after living in the East End (including the Whitechapel District) for several months, sometimes staying in workhouses or sleeping on the streets. The conditions he experienced and wrote about, were the same as those endured by an estimated 500,000 of the contemporary London poor.

England's Version of "How the Other Half Lives"
Revisado: 11-01-22
this was the first non-fiction Jack London work I read (listened to) and I loved it. It fits right in with the Victorian Slum documentaries and the works of Jacob Riis. Jack London immerses himself in the community of London's East End and shares his experiences, revealing his sharp mind and kind heart. a fine bit of historical journalism! The only flaw was the recording quality and soft tone of the narration. Not terrible, just lackluster and still worth the purchase.

Historia
In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen. From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

Listen to Several Hours of Traumatizing Women
Revisado: 06-03-21
This was presented as an empowering look at the women of the time. I'm returning it a third of the way in because it has instead been several hours of hurting women. Women suffer in so many other stories, but the author has done a lovely job of compiling all the women of this era into one collection for the listener to hear their suffering all at once! Charming. I don't care to sit through all of that just to hopefully get to some feel good moment at the end.
Also, the narrator has a flat tone, sounding stern and bored. The story jumps around with segments of a couple of main plot lines broken up by short stories in between. Yes, refund time.

While the world seems to be in love with the idea of tiny houses and minimalism, many of us simply can't purge it all and start from nothing. Yet a home with too much stuff is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress.

Surprisingly Thoughtful
Revisado: 01-25-21
Like others have said, I felt like I was getting advice from a friend. Her methods are realistic and achievable, but the last few chapters were really the author's best exhibition of sensibility. She addresses sorting and parting with stuff encountered in the more difficult areas of life. These situations include helping a friend declutter, working through genuine hoarder situations, cleaning out the possessions of someone who has passed and letting go of things that are sentimental or make you feel regret (plus understanding the difference between these emotions). I have a hard time with these last things sometimes, but the author addresses them with genuine compassion, making her tips for decluttering easier to follow through with.

A peek at another time and place.
Revisado: 01-07-21
If you enjoy vintage writing, this classic won't disappoint. The time spent describing details holds the story back a little, but I loved the world building here. I could almost taste the cakes, smell the leaves and hear the birds. In a modern story it would be too much, but since this was written in the early 19th century, I enjoyed hearing it from someone experiencing that moment in time.

A podcast disguised as a book.
Revisado: 05-11-20
This is a podcast where comic movie stars use their time, money and influence to recreate a meal using documents of Hemingway's parties. I love history, especially experimental projects, but this is just rich buddies hanging out together at themed dinner parties. I'm glad it was one of my monthly freebies, because I can't finish it.

More science less life stories.
Revisado: 09-10-18
Much of the first chapter (half the book) was the life story of two people, which contributed little to the driving point of the book. A little background would have been enough. I struggled to get past that hour+ then enjoyed the the rest.

Following the surge of interest and pride in Celtic identity since the 19th century, much of what we thought we knew about the Celts has been radically transformed. In The Celtic World, discover the incredible story of the Celtic-speaking peoples, whose art, language, and culture once spread from Ireland to Austria. This series of 24 enlightening lectures explains the traditional historical view of who the Celts were, then contrasts it with brand-new evidence from DNA analysis and archeology that totally changes our perspective on where the Celts came from.

I wish this had a different title
Revisado: 06-20-18
I wish this had a different title, maybe "The History of Ireland and Friends". Professor Paxton clearly cares about the subject and reads very clearly, but I had to speed it up a little. The content was good, but not what I was looking for. Based on the title, I was hoping for more immersive daily life as a Celt. I have been to several Celtic historical sites and museums in Austria, but Hallstatt culture is only briefly discussed here. If you want the history of Irish kings and and a comparison of movies with real life, this may be for you. If you want to know more about living in the iron age, skip it. There is little about what regular people ate, wore or did with their typical day. I definitely appreciate the included, illustrated .PDF. Overall, this was okay but I preferred the much more comprehensive book, A Brief History of the Celts, by Peter Berresford Ellis.
