Historia
As a colourful array of girlfriends moves through Cassie's life, and a number of brilliant men become Leo's lovers, they find they need each other just as much as they need their romantic partners. Then they meet the mysterious street performer who will change both their lives: The Shakespeare Lady, at once comical and eerie. She recites passages from Hamlet for small change and bewitches all who see her.

beautifully written poignant story of a large group of creative friends. it wasnt until i was nearing the end that I realized Waterhouse might be compared favorably to Dickins. there are long passages in the middle that were so sad, I wanted to cry, the characters so realistic that I loved many of them. I'll have to listen to this 10 hour epic again soon.

Historia
Tegan, the young air hostess who quite unintentionally became a member of the TARDIS's crew, wants to return to her own time, but when the Doctor tries to take her back to Heathrow Airport in the 20th century the TARDIS lands instead on the outskirts of 17th-century London. The Doctor and his companions receive a decidedly unfriendly welcome - but it soon becomes clear that the sinister activities of other visitors from time and space have made the villagers extremely suspicious of outsiders.

Excellent Doctor Who Story
Revisado: 03-19-17
Would you listen to Doctor Who and the Visitation again? Why?
The Doctor and his companions set down in the English countryside during the summer of 1666, a time of rampant fears of the plague. I enjoyed Mr. Waterhouse's reading of this tale, especially his entertaining impersonations of various characters, such as Adric & Richard Mace.

Historia
When the TARDIS materialises on an alien spacecraft, the commander of the ship - the reptilian Monarch - invites the Doctor, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan to continue their journey to Earth in his company. Monarch's hospitality even extends to a generous offer to liberate the time travellers from the shortcomings of their bodies and replicate them as androids - so much more practical. Although Adric finds this proposal extremely attractive, the Doctor has good reason to be suspicious of Monarch's motives....

Heartwarming
Revisado: 03-12-17
What about Matthew Waterhouse’s performance did you like?
Soothing voice. His own enjoyment of the program is contagious.
Any additional comments?
In a word, the audio of Four to Doomsday is "heartwarming." It's an interesting adventure, pretty much exactly like the television serial from which it was adapted, very slightly extended, and it all ends with the characters snugly back in the TARDIS.

Geoffrey Beevers reads this exciting novelisation of a 1980 TV adventure featuring the Fourth Doctor, as played by Tom Baker. The Doctor, Romana and K9 - and a young stowaway called Adric - are trapped in the alternative universe of E-Space. Seeking help, they land on an unknown planet. There they find a nightmare world where oppressed peasants toil for the Lords who live in the Tower and where all learning is forbidden: a society in a state of decay. What is the terrifying secret of the Three Who Rule?

Historia
Sara Smith is one of the most monstrous characters you can hope to meet. She lives in Greenwich Village on Life Insurance, courtesy of her late husband, but she has fallen into a dreary routine: work in a card shop by day, where she is the rudest sales clerk imaginable, and weary evenings passed in the same cellar bar night after night with the same old people. But when she meets and seduces a gorgeous boy called Steve, she has no idea what she is getting herself into.

Quirky love story
Revisado: 10-20-16
Would you listen to Fates, Flowers again? Why?
I would listen to this again because it is funny and compelling. In fact, I have listened to it several times already.
What other book might you compare Fates, Flowers to and why?
I don't know that I can compare it to anything else I've read. Woman sees young stud from her window -- like a weed sprouting from a crack in the sidewalk. What might they have in common?
Which scene was your favorite?
I particularly enjoyed the opening scenes of this novel. Will they or won't they get together? It's arresting from the get-go.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
An unlikely, wacky love story!
Any additional comments?
Everything is not quite as it seems. Some things in life are funny, but much of it can be quite horrible. This was a fun but thought provoking novel. A writer usually reads his own work well, so that was no surprise. When that writer is a brilliant intellectual and also a fine actor who knows all the characters intimately and performs them flawlessly, then the listener is the beneficiary of a masterful performance. This story has haunted me for weeks -- in a good way.

Matthew Waterhouse reads this classic novelisation of a Fourth Doctor TV adventure. The Doctor, Romana and K9 are heading for Gallifrey when they temporarily lose control of the TARDIS. The significance of this event is only revealed when they land, not on Gallifrey but on Alzarius. The planet's legendary Mistfall is approaching, a time when giant scaly creatures emerge from the swamps and go on the rampage, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake.

Exciting novelization of a 1980 story
Revisado: 10-20-16
What did you like best about this story?
This new recording of the 1982 novel is an in-depth dramatization of the four-episode story Full Circle which aired in 1980 begins with exciting, explosive scenes eloquently written and elegantly performed. The sound effects and music are stunning.
What about John Leeson and Matthew Waterhouse ’s performance did you like?
The voices are excellent. I was particularly impressed that Waterhouse could voice four people in a conversation and the sound design was so carefully done that the listener could instantly discern which character was speaking each time from the first word in the sentence because of where the voice was coming from. It sounded as if multiple actors were all standing and moving about in front of me. Add to that that the voices/accents/dialects all varied. Waterhouse is a major talent.
Any additional comments?
The depth of the four-hour unabridged novel, with its allegory and allusion to religions and evolution, made for a much richer experience than the 90-minute TV story arc. I was amazed.

Historia
An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, best-selling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

Any additional comments?
Though her first novel, this is an interesting sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout is grown up and facing some uncomfortable problems with race relations in her home town. But knowing and loving the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird makes this all more palatable. There are some wonderful flashbacks to Scout's idyllic childhood that really shine.

Historia
When Kathryn Leigh Scott's husband was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurological disease for which there is (so far) no cure, it was a devastating time for both of them, not least because so little is known about the cause or treatment of a disease that affects some 20,000 Americans, a number similar to that of Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS).

Incredibly Moving Experience
Revisado: 10-20-16
What did you love best about Last Dance at the Savoy?
Beautiful actress/author Kathryn Leigh Scott was a loving and energetic caregiver to her dying husband. We can only hope to have someone half as patient and caring with us in our final days.
Any additional comments?
The chronicle of this intensely personal, yet ultimately universal, journey for Kathryn and her late husband is moving, well written, and well performed by the author. I'm extremely grateful that she memorialized this time in their lives.

Best thing I've read in 30 years
Revisado: 10-20-16
Where does Sugar rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Very top
What did you like best about this story?
The thing I liked most was the diversity of the four stories in this collection
What does Matthew Waterhouse bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The author is a good actor and displays depth and nuance in multiple characters. The various characterizations and accents display an exciting talent.
Any additional comments?
The thing that surprised me most about this collection is that I've found myself thinking about these hilarious and sad stories for weeks afterward, haunted by them and compelled alternatively to reread passages and relisten to the audios time and again. The tales are entertaining on the surface level as well as fine literature for the thinking person. They're even better the second and third time around. The unabridged Audible version of this collection is most enjoyable, with Waterhouse giving pitch perfect voice to the multiple characters. It is highly recommended. I have not read such a fun, entertaining and fulfilling work in 30 years.
