Fully engaged
Revisado: 03-31-25
I was genuinely pleasantly surprised by this book. The first two or three chapters had me doubting the author's ability to create realistic and deep characters but the story rapidly progressed and characters bloomed. Is it a perfectly realistic, smart sci-fi with no holes in it? No, but better than most screenwriting I see today and what I would describe as a page turner. Worth a credit for sure.

Historia
In the heart of the South Pacific lies Point Nemo, the most desolate and remote place on Earth. At its core is a dead zone, devoid of life, where government agencies crash their obsolete satellites and space stations, confident they won't harm a soul. When the International Space Station suffers a catastrophic failure and plummets through the atmosphere, it's here that Mission Specialist Julie Rohr, an astrobiologist studying living space dust called xylem, finds herself marooned. Julie's only hope for rescue lies in the hands of her estranged father, Dr. Finn Maddern, a renowned mycologist.

fun premise, terrible writing
Revisado: 08-25-24
I had such a hard time getting through this book. I'm fairly capable of suspending my disbelief, but every single bit of "science" was unforgivably wrong and bad. There wasn't a chapter without a huge unrealistic gaffe. cannot recommend even with the great narrator

monologues
Revisado: 06-29-24
The format of this big is it's greatest downfall. I am a fan of Jack Voraces for his excellent character voices, none of which we got to hear in this story as it it three books of monologues. The climax gets multicharacter dialogue which cam as a pleasant surprise after a bit of a slog. I think the first book was fine as a stage setting long prologue to the real story, but the next two books were in a format of a debrief and log recodings. if they story were told in real time perspective as events happened it would have been more exciting. the story itself was not bad, but I had a hard time trying to decide if it was supposed to be an action sci-fi that didn't quite deliver or if it was a series of comical anecdotes that didn't quite land because of the format. Either way I didn't have an emotional connection to the story because the few characters didn't have an emotional connection to who they were talking to. I look forward to the authors growth

Revisado: 04-09-24
When a story tells you the prophecy and fulfills it with any mystery or moral lesson, why is it even written? I don't know. it was a waste of my time.

Historia
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned. Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it. What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do? Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

It's a prequel
Revisado: 11-07-23
I really wish it had been marketed as a prequel instead of a sequel. I had high hopes of seeing some of my favorite characters again. The story is good. It has the same feel as Legends and Latte's. but it's not a sequel. it's not even a direct prequel. It takes place well before the first story

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

fantastic wrap up
Revisado: 05-13-23
I've enjoyed all the books in the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper Chronicles. This book was the greatest deviation from the rest of the series so far. There is a good deal of mystery and suspense. The conclusion is solid and doesn't leave a bunch of unresolved issues. I really look forward to listening to it again now that I have the insights provided towards the end of the story.

Best Dog Walker yet
Revisado: 02-06-23
The world now knows demons exist. Our favorite insecure dog walker has a new challenge to face. His mom is marrying a murderous dolphin.... This is my favorite instalment of Dog Walker yet. The audio production improved from the second book by toning down some of the sound effects, and to be honest I think now I'm just acclimated to Patrick Trahey's narration style as opposed to Travis Baldree from the first book.
This book has more lore and mythology from other cultures, including judeo-christian demons. I would say it's the most irreverent Dog Walker yet. It has a great mix of drama, humor, suspense and just over the top and outlandish scenarios. Solid 5/5* fun

a very satisfying conclusion
Revisado: 02-02-23
I see a lot of negative reviews about how this ending was rushed or full of tropes and I have to disagree. Craig Alanson did not drag out the story. the ending was predictable but it also gave the listener what we wanted. there was some tragedy so it wasn't 100% indulgent gratification, just enough of it was.

a lot of nothing
Revisado: 01-29-23
I am a huge Dennis E Taylor fan and this was the biggest disappointment from him. I really believe that the first book created a world with lots of great potential. This story did not explore any of that. it felt rushed. There were several subplots that had no real effect on the overall plot and the conclusion left readers/listeners in the same state of unknown future as the first book. The SAME state of things. I think that I would call this book 1.5 instead of two.
