Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Stopped After Chapter 10
Revisado: 03-13-25
Maybe too early but I did not want to be read the entire story! Where are the rich characters? And the soothing soul of Armand Gamache. New narrator just terrible! Everyine sounds the same, well except Rosie where he makes an effort to distort her usual F, F F!
I've read every Gamqche and it pained me to stop especially as I am reading the next book may tie into this. Please bring back old narrator!!!!

Just TOO Dang Boring.
Revisado: 09-28-24
I enjoyed every word of Ayn Rand's " Atlas Shrugged" on audio - all 1200 pages! Easy because that book was interesting, But THIS?
I thought I'd stick it out as I read it had a " climatic" ending. But by chapter 40 I wondered how I could finish. Finally by chapter 44 I HAD to see how much more to go when I saw that I was only half way through - Kill me now please! As another reviewer said " how can any book about Dracula be boring"?
Hard to grasp how Kirkus gave this a great review.

I've only read 3 Haller story but read everything with Bosch. This was Connelly at the top of his game. He filled it with twists and turns and you never knew which directions the story would go. Thrilling!

More Agatha always enjoyable
Revisado: 05-03-24
Read all the Agatha books and really enjoy the cases where 80% of the book involves " just" Agatha. Lots of moments with regular characters like Charles, Toni, Roy and James but this mystery affects Agatha personally as she discovers a murder victim. Penelope Keith never ceases to amaze me with her wonderful voices, so always 5* for performance. Gave a 4* to story as it lacked that expected " Agatha" humor. Nonetheless, definitely worth a read whether new or okd to the series.

Nina Bloom? Just Not For Me
Revisado: 04-09-24
I wanted to find a new author to read, and Nina sounded perfect. The story was not strong, but then I just finished the Cormoren Strike series and Galbraith's ( Rowling's) writing is superb, so I may be judging more harsh than needed? Still, I could not like Nina and that's a problem if you dislike the main character. The fact that she repeatedly puts her need to " help" others ahead of her family's needs was difficult to digest. I had hoped by the end, she would have redeemed herself to me, but the ending just reinforced my dislike. No worry, as thankfully I have two Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books awaiting.

Reggie and Nigel Heath are relatively close in age but worlds apart in personality. The older of the two brothers, Reggie is a successful attorney with charisma to spare. Nigel has always struggled to step out of his shadow. When Reggie leases space in an office building on London's Baker Street, he finds that the paperwork comes with an odd stipulation: his firm must receive and respond with a standard reply to letters sent to Sherlock Holmes, who had occupied the same famous address.

Dry and hard to swallow.
Revisado: 03-13-24
Its the first in the series so I'll give it slack for character development. I do plan to read book two in the hopes of liking the characters more. As of now, the two brothers are quite dry with little personality, The story is serious by lacks complexity, More like a cozy minus the cozy.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Wonderful but sometimes felt never ending
Revisado: 11-07-23
Ditto to above. Yet I would not want to have missed this. Like others, I became interested after seeing the film Oppenheimer. If you've seen the film and were intrigued, definitely give this a read. The section on the actual " hearing/trial had me almost moving along. Very monotonous. Terribly glad I stuck with it.

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

19 Hours for THAT ending?
Revisado: 07-03-23
Big fan of Gregory and especially this series. The first is a 5 star, the second a 4 star but this? Just cannot go more than 3. The story drags. Its four audio hours longer than the other two which is fine but Gregory tried to jam too much into one book. AND I am especially disappointed that she did not kill off or destroy the " noble donna"? If the cliffhanger ending is to get me to read another book in the series, I just cannot put up with the manipulations and destruction that she causes. And how is it that none of the other characters ever compare notes and discover her treachery. Too many moments of incredulous behavior, as if Rib would EVER do anything for her " because he once loved me"??? How could Alice believe that and worse help this creature get away? I managed to put all those plot holes in the back of my mind with the joy knowing she's at least gone but then is she? Definitely worth reading the first two books but be prepared for disappointment if you read the third.

Love the Strike/Ellacott novels - but not this one
Revisado: 11-03-22
Like many mysteries, the reader has to familiarize themselves first with a myriad of characters. I’ve been in a mystery book club for some time and one criticism heard over and over is “ it was too hard to follow”. Thankfully I never ran into this problem, always paying close attention to the descriptions and interactions of each new character. That is until reading The Ink Black Heart. Not only are there many characters but 90% of every character has an online name. Often times, entire chapters were devoted to characters talking inside a game and often in private messages, while always using their fake online game or even twitter names. Had I read this via my e-reader, I would have highlighted each new character, and noted their online names, so I’d have a place to reference when confused. And lord, did I find myself confused over and over, sometimes so lost, I just had to continue and “hope” I wasn’t missing something critical. Sadly, I even missed the climax, having zero clue who Robin was chasing, until it was all over.
Again had I highlighted and noted everyone early on, this could have been avoided, so I just mention it hoping others get to enjoy the book more than me. Aside from the confusion, I totally disliked so much of the storyline being told thru online conversation. Just too much to hear over and over, so it’s still 3 stars regardless. I have read all up until now and rated all 5 stars if that helps.
