Legendary, not to be mossed with Dame Stevenson’s narration
Revisado: 04-28-25
What an incredible work of art. In all of time and ages, and with Juliet Stevenson actually loving Wuthering Heights as a book, this came to be an amazing, most incredible audiobook . I have listened to it maybe over twenty times, it is as good as going back to an old show you rewatch constantly, except the depth of the feelings and the authenticity of Dame Stevenson’s voice, accents and such are one of a kind and not to be repeated. I highly recommend Jane Eyre read by her as well. I wish she did all of the Brontë novels!!!

Historia
Abigail, the story of a headstrong teenager growing up during World War II, is the most beloved of Magda Szabo's books in her native Hungary. Gina is the only child of a general, a widower who has long been happy to spoil his bright and willful daughter. Gina is devastated when the general tells her that he must go away on a mission and that he will be sending her to boarding school in the country. She is even more aghast at the grim religious institution to which she soon finds herself consigned.

Great narration, slightly better than average story
Revisado: 04-18-25
Interesting story, but I think the details and images in the book could have been better. The story was set in a way that I knew all about the plot twists from the beginning, namely, they weren’t super well-twisted or well-concealed.
The voice actress did a great job.

A Greatly peculiar Murdoch
Revisado: 10-30-24
This is the 10th Murdoch I have read (or rather, listened to) and I am baffled by how much her works could truly be identified as "a Murdocy", yet have absolutely nothing in common. This one was peculiar and philosophical (maybe less than "The Unicorn", my most favorite Murdoch) and the narrator did an incredible job with different characters. She was so good with the stutter of a character that I actually had to stop listening for an hour to get over that brilliance before resuming.

Historia
From Lauren Graham, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, comes a witty, charming, and hilariously relatable debut novel about a struggling young actress trying to get ahead - and keep it together - in New York City. It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing "important" work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club....

actress struggles...cliche or fresh outlook?
Revisado: 09-06-24
I am a big Gilmore Girls fan, which is how I know Lauren Graham and how I came to find her book. I read mixed reviews about it, and maybe it was kind of a cliche when it was written, but it was fun, deep and refreshing for me to listen to. A struggling actress is no news, especially in New York, but she helped us see into her head as a person with feelings, and not just a pretty girl obsessing over her jeans' size. I also loved the connection between J. D. Salinger's Franny and the protagonist, I personally love that short story and I had never seen it being interpreted in this way. loved it!

This is the story of how those marriages shape the sister’s lives, the consequences of their decisions, and the sisterly love that hopes to save them from tragedy.

vanilla facade, a world of wonder inside
Revisado: 04-29-24
I bought this book when Persephone books published it with the beautiful portrait on the cover of the three people having tea, but the flow was too slow for me and I eventually gave up. when I read on their website about this new audiobook version, I immediately snatched it up and finished it in three days. i think it's important to hear the story read in British accent, however ridiculous that may sound.
The story is very similar to what I have seen in almost every family, no matter the cultural or geographical background. Whipple completely knows her characters and describes them through the eyes of a person who wants to understand why.
a great read.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

a great story revived by Andy Serkis!
Revisado: 12-23-23
I tried reading the Hobbit when I was in high school, and had to leave it unfinished (several times). I read LOTR years after that and loved it, and came to the conclusion that I didn't like the Hobbit because it was a children's story, and boring for my age.
I was wrong!
this Audiobook is unbelievably amazing. Andy Serkis does such a fantastic job as narrator, voice artist and storyteller.

Historia
Iris Murdoch's first novel is set in a part of London where struggling writers rub shoulders with successful bookies, and film starlets with frantic philosophers. Its hero, Jake Donaghue, is a drifting, clever, likeable young man who makes a living out of translation work and sponging on his friends. A meeting with Anna, an old flame, leads him into a series of fantastic adventures.

The stories in Ali Smith’s new collection are about what we do with books and what they do with us: how they travel with us; how they shock us, change us, challenge us, banish time while making us older, wiser and ageless all at once; how they remind us to pay attention to the world we make.
