Historia
It is eleven thousand years from now . . . A lot has happened, and yet a lot is still very familiar. Ariel is a boy in a small town under a wizard’s rule. Like many adventurers before him, Ariel is called to explore a world full of unimaginable glories and challenges: unknown enemies, a mission to save the world, a girl. Here, as they say, be dragons. But none of this happens before Ariel comes across an artifact from an earlier civilization, a sentient, record-keeping artificial intelligence that carries with it the perspective of the whole of human history.

If you loved a wrinkle in time as a kid you are in for a treat
Revisado: 10-12-24
Some how Sloan manages to have woven together a truly zany plot, with well developed characters and meditative pacing that dives into deeper philosophical thought, without ever taking it too seriously.

Historia
Cecilia Bassingwaite is the ideal Victorian lady. She's also a thief. Like the other members of the Wisteria Society crime sorority, she flies around England drinking tea, blackmailing friends, and acquiring treasure by interesting means. Sure, she has a dark and traumatic past and an overbearing aunt, but all things considered, it's a pleasant existence. Until the men show up.

Revisado: 07-14-24
I had this title on my to read list, but was a bit worried after reading some of the audible reviews. I needn’t have worried. It was a delightfully wry and adventurous tale, with lovable characters, masterfully narrated.

Historia
A long time ago in the future, the secret of time travel became known to all. Unsurprisingly, the world nearly ended. There will always be idiots who want to change history. Enter the Time Police. An all-powerful, international organisation tasked with keeping the timeline straight. At all costs. Their success is legendary. The Time Wars are over. But now they must fight to save a very different future - their own. This is the story of Jane, Luke and Matthew - the worst recruits in Time Police history. Or, very possibly, three young people who might change everything.

Revisado: 06-19-24
The characters were lovable, the story was engaging and the world building was solid. I only wish I knew about the related series before I dive in as I feel like there was even more depth I was missing out on!

Historia
In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

Completely different from the first book
Revisado: 02-19-24
Unlike Doomsday Book which was vey heavy and sad, this book was a fun romp. However, I really think the second book is strengthened by the first, which sets out all of the world building and rules. I suspect one might be a bit lost if they jumped into this book without having read The Doomsday Book first.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

This is a compelling real life story told from multiple perspectives. Although some have complained about the narration, I found it very well done and have enjoyed this narrator before. If you are unsure just listen to a sample!

Historia
When the witch built the 40-flight tower, she made very sure to do the whole thing properly. Each flight contains a dreadful monster, ranging from a diamond-scaled dragon to a pack of slavering goblins. Should a prince battle his way to the top, he will be rewarded with a golden sword - and the lovely Princess Floralinda. But no prince has managed to conquer the first flight yet, let alone get to the 40th. In fact, the supply of fresh princes seems to have quite dried up.

Poor man’s Andy Weir
Revisado: 10-21-23
I think if I had read this before Martian or Hail Mary project I would be giving it higher marks. It is very reminiscent of Andy Weir’s style, but the characters aren’t quite as lovable and the dialogue isn’t quite as funny, but that said it still scratched an itch and I will try some more of the series.
