Historia
Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

A delightful listen with a variety of rich, interesting female characters. Above all, another fantastic read by Jenna Lamia. I became a huge fan of Jenna Lamia after The Help. Another job superbly done! My next book will be another read by Jenna Lamia. (Jenna, if you're reading this --- you are a wonderful talent!! Please narrate more books!)

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Revisado: 08-05-10
Hardly one third into the book and I LOVE this book. The story is engaging and the talent behind the character voices is just overflowing. The readers really bring the characters to life. So well done.
I love driving to/from work now because I get to listen to The Help.

Love the story, but not so much the narrator
Revisado: 07-02-10
Half way through the book and I'm very much enjoying the story. Jean Kwok is a vivid and descriptive story teller. Kudos to her. Can't wait to start commuting each day just to listen the story.
The narrator on the other hand...when she reads in plain English, she's terrific. But I simply cannot stand, nor understand, when she voices the characters in accents. Horrendous. The Chinese accents are monotone, robotic, broken and unauthentic. The non-Chinese characters seem to have unidentifiable accents too; not sure what kind of accents they are and why they mispronounce words. Unfortunately, the accents can be quite distracting, leaving the listener a bit confused. Without the accents, reader is great.
Looking forward to finishing the story.

Totally absorbed with the characters and story
Revisado: 06-18-10
Bravo Emily Giffin. Tugged at my heart strings for both lead characters. I was totally enthralled with the book --- totally drawn in to the story line. The alternating voices between chapters worked beautifully. One of the few books I'm thinking of listening to again.
Double bravo to Cynthia Nixon for a brilliant read.
I hope Emily Giffin is working on her next book because I can't wait.

Historia
Readers and listeners have followed Jen Lancaster through job loss, sucky city living, weight loss attempts, and 1980s nostalgia. Now Jen chronicles her efforts to achieve cultural enlightenment, with some hilarious missteps and genuine moments of inspiration along the way. And she does so by any means necessary: reading canonical literature, viewing classic films, attending the opera, researching artisan cheeses, and even enrolling in etiquette classes to improve her social graces.

Disappointing.... (but terrific narrator!)
Revisado: 05-20-10
My first Jen Lancaster book...I'm a reality tv nut and was really excited to read My Fair Lazy. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed. Had a hard time following the story, couldn't quite figure out the plot so I lost interest and didn't finish the book.
Despite the book, the narrator, however, was really terrific --- animated and spirited. She was the main reason I stuck with the book for as long as I did.

Spoiled by narrator
Revisado: 02-02-10
I am very disappointed... I loved loved loved reading the Nanny Diaries, and was so looking forward to listening to the book. But right off the bat I couldn't get into the story because I was distracted by the narrator. You can hear every single breath she takes, and her character voices were flat. Perhaps I am being too hard on the reader... perhaps the recording was just extra sensitive to her breathing and other lip smacking like noises. Sorry Susan Bennett...
The story was fine, but I probably wasn't paying close enough attention to enjoy it...

Much better than Second Assistant
Revisado: 01-31-10
This book was much more entertaining than the first book, Second Assistant (but helps to read it before reading this one). The story gave a deeper insight into celebrities and movie making.
Narrator for this book made the book very enjoyable (again, better than the first book). This is the second book I've listened to narrated by Shelly Frasier, and I chose this book in great part because of her. She does a great job with the character voices without making it overly cheesy, especially with male voices.

Four different women. One common shoe size. And a shared lust for fabulous footwear. In this sparkling novel, the wife of a controlling politician, a debt-ridden eBay addict, an agoraphobic phone sex operator, and a nanny for the family from hell (who barely knows a sole from a heel but who will do anything to get out of the house) meet Tuesday nights to trade shoes, and, in the process, form friendships that will help them each triumph over their problems—from secret pasts to blackmail, bankruptcy, and dating.

Interesting characters
Revisado: 11-03-09
Overall, an enjoyable story with four interesting characters with very different backgrounds coming together. I thought the author did a nice job developing these characters with entertaining storylines.
The narrator was just okay, a bit robotic at times though.

Too bad it's abridged
Revisado: 10-12-09
Love Kathy Griffin and thought her book was good. The book did indeed start off slow, but overall it was an enjoyable listen. I wish I could have enjoyed the entire book rather than just the abridged version.
And so glad it was narrated by KG. It was more like she was talking to you rather than reading her book to you.
