Better than even really good art books, better than even really good books about Buddhism.

I read a lot of books, specifically I read a lot of books about Buddhism and a fair few about art. This is somehow magically one of the best in both categories. Townley gorgeously explains the nuances of the five Buddha families using art as a lens using flexible, lush, and often hilarious prose. I almost never listen to art books because, well, pictures, but this is a fabulous listen because Townley is also a great voice actor. And I personally found imagining the works part of the fun. Despite the fact that Townley is juggling two unwieldy and vast topics, the message delivered is clear and hopeful. I came away understanding the five Buddha families and how and why they can help me understand the nature of my own mind. So many wins. I’m currently listening to the book again. Like I finished it and then I just pressed play again.
