Historia
1932: Located on the banks of the Gilead River in Minnesota, Lincoln School is home to hundreds of Native American boys and girls who have been separated from their families. The only two white boys in the school are orphan brothers Odie and Albert, who, under the watchful eyes of the cruel superintendent Mrs. Brickman, are often in trouble for misdeeds both real and imagined. The two boys' best friend is Mose, a mute Native American who is also the strongest kid in school. And they find another ally in Cora Frost, a widowed teacher who is raising her little girl, Emmy, by herself.

Surprises and heart, it left me in tears
Revisado: 06-20-24
I frankly decided on this book because it was part of the "plus" catalog and I was waiting for my credit to come. I'm so glad I took a chance. The twists and turns in the lives of the "4 vagabonds" left me exclaiming aloud on my walks - I felt so deeply for the lives of these modern day Huck Finns.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Not bad, just boring
Revisado: 01-03-24
Frankly, amazed that this won the Pulitzer.. When I finally understood the "game" of the novel, I went back to the beginning to see how we got there, thinking that it would be more interesting with the denouement in mind. It wasn't. So, to reiterate : not bad, just boring. Also, ending supremely unsatisfying.

Historia
Everyone knows everyone in the tiny town of Bourne, but the Mitchell triplets are especially beloved. Mirabel is the smartest person anyone knows, and no one doubts it just because she can’t speak. Monday is the town’s purveyor of books now that the library’s closed - tell her the book you think you want, and she’ll pull the one you actually do from the microwave or her sock drawer. Mab’s job is hardest of all: get good grades, get into college, get out of Bourne.

Unexpectedly delightful
Revisado: 12-16-22
I wasn't quite on board with the triplets thing in the beginning. But then I saw how it set the scene for the rest of the book. As soon as I understood the family and the town characters and what "had happened", I was all in. I loved it!

So, when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically. The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything.

The voice of "Miz" Ora is terrific and the complexity of her character is a joy to hear unfold. Holds a mirror up to society through the lives of people we really care about.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Historia
Who is Elmyr? Simply put, Elmyr de Hory is known by many as the most notorious art forger of all time. He believed that if a forgery hangs in a museum for long enough - as he claimed many of his works did - it eventually becomes real. Yet, as with many fraudsters, much of the myth is exaggeration or invention.

Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Beautiful story and interesting history.
Revisado: 01-17-21
As a librarian myself, I was enchanted and humbled to learn of the pack horse librarians, which I knew nothing about. I cried at the patrons deep joy at the arrival of the book woman. Added to that, the complex story of the blue skinned people and the poverty during the Depression all goes to make a fascinating and deeply moving listen.
