Historia
The Girl at the Baggage Claim is a provocative and important study of the different ideas easterners and westerners have about the self and society and what this means for current debates in art, education, geopolitics, and business. Never have East and West come as close as they are today, yet we are still baffled by one another. Is our mantra "To thine own self be true"? Or do we believe we belong to something larger than ourselves - a family, a religion, a troop - that claims our first allegiance?

Terrible narration - interesting content
Revisado: 03-18-25
The narration is one of the worst I have heard on Audible yet. Because there are strange pauses throughout the text and the intonation doesn't seem to match the content at times, it has been difficult for me to follow the logic of the text. I slowed down the narration to try to blur the odd pauses that segment the paragraphs in very strange ways, and that has helped a little. The narrator speeds through the text at times really fast and then stops and leaves long pauses, but not at points that would make sense. The content is interesting, the author backs up some arguments effectively with research about individualistic and collectivistic cultures.

Historia
What should we eat? It's a simple and fundamental question that still bewilders us despite a seemingly infinite amount of available information on which foods are best for our bodies. Scientists, dieticians, and even governments regularly publish research on the dangers of too much fat and sugar as well as on the benefits of exercise, and yet the global obesity crisis is only worsening. Most diet plans prove to be only short-term solutions, and few strategies work for everyone.

Lively narrator, good storytelling. Some buzzing on the audio. Too many personal stories - seemed a little thin in content.
Fun to listen to though, but not sure I would recommend.

Make It Stick turns fashionable ideas like these on their head and will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement.

Excellent - worthwhile reading for those who teach
Revisado: 12-20-20
Well written, engaging, great insights on learning. Explores ideas about how we learn with research - does changing physical location impact information retention when studying, and what study techniques are most effective (asking oneself questions over text highlighting or re-reading). Really interesting.

What makes everyday spaces work, how do they shape us, and what do they say about us? The spaces we live in - whether public areas, housing, offices, hospitals or cities - mediate community, creativity and our very identity, making us who we are. Using insights from environmental psychology, design, and architecture, The Shaping of Us reveals the often imperceptible ways in which our surroundings influence our behaviour.

Fun to listen book on Environmental Psych

Covers much of the best known literature on Environmental Psychology related to the built environment. It's easy to follow and fairly entertaining. Pruitt-Igoe is mispronounced, but the narration is good.

Historia
Food is one of life's great joys. So why has eating become such a source of anxiety and confusion? Bee Wilson shows that in two generations the world has undergone a massive shift from traditional, limited diets to more globalized ways of eating, from bubble tea to quinoa, from Soylent to meal kits. Paradoxically, our diets are getting healthier and less healthy at the same time. For some, there has never been a happier food era than today: a time of unusual herbs, farmers' markets, and internet recipe swaps.

Great story teller, engaging writer and narrator
Revisado: 08-01-19
Bee Wilson is a great story teller. I've listened to the three books of hers available on Audible and they are all really engaging -- she uses all kinds of sources to build her arguments, weaves stories and data very effectively, and focuses on very interesting issues about food and our relationship to food. Discusses recent changes in food production and consumption patterns around the world. I found the information about Latin American food consumption changes since the 90s really interesting. The narration is also very good and very clear. Highly recommend.

Engaging and well written. Great story telling.
Revisado: 11-30-18
Excellent. Unusual topic -- I found this volume when browsing. It focuses on the history of eating and cooking tools, traditions and places (for example, the fork, the spit, the kitchen), primarily in the UK and the West, but also around the world, cnnecting it to cutlure and behavior. Truly interesting. The narrator is also very good.

Revisado: 11-30-18
Excellent. Well written book with lots of interesting infomation. The author does a great job of exploring adolescent behavior and relates research to her experience counseling teen girls, clarifying concepts and presenting pssible approaches for specific situations (for ex., motivating a rebellious teen to keep up with her academic work). Her explanation of teen behavior, even when baffling, coutnerproductive or erratic, as part of a necessary developmental stage aimed towards becoming an independent adult is well presented and informative.
