Great story writing / satisfying ending
Revisado: 04-12-25
I thoroughly enjoyed Elantris. I actually didn’t realize the Cosmere was a thing when I first started reading Sanderson. My first book was Warbreaker, which I loved — so I moved on to Mistborn (which tons of people had recommended). Somewhere along the way I learned about the Cosmere and looked up a reading order, only to find out Elantris was technically the place to start. That said, it honestly doesn’t matter much. The only real difference was that I might have picked up on a few extra details, like the character Hoid.
The worldbuilding in Elantris is rich without being overwhelming. Sanderson does a great job keeping the narrative clean and easy to follow, even with multiple POVs. The politics, religion, and magic all weave together really well, and the ending ties it up in a way that feels earned and satisfying. The magic system in particular felt like its own character — I was genuinely rooting for it to work out.
I absolutely loved Raoden’s character. His arc is fantastic, and I really appreciated how grounded and optimistic he stays, even with everything stacked against him. It’s refreshing to have a main character who’s genuinely good at heart but still has depth. Sarene was another standout — brilliant, bold, and with her own complex arc. She never felt like she was just there for the romance.
Hrathen might have been my favorite overall. His crisis of faith was written incredibly well, and I loved watching him go through his own internal journey.
There are so many beautifully drawn characters here — even the side characters had great moments. I’d honestly love to see a sequel (like what I’ve heard might happen with Warbreaker), but I understand why this one stands on its own.
Definitely a recommended read — it has everything I love in a good fantasy: great story, strong characters, compelling world, and just enough magic to make it all feel alive.

Historia
Beckett: If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have. I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride. My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart.

Very emotional but good
Revisado: 11-16-23
I’m trying not to give away spoilers but as a mom who experienced the exact issue as what happens with the main character’s daughter I appreciated the authenticity in story. I had some issues with the plausibility around only minor things but overall was very close to the feelings I felt when my daughter went through what she went through. Also, it’s a testimony in the end that sometimes tragedy strikes a person and doesn’t let go. That is realistic. The grief aspect was written well but there were times I was angry about her reasons for not trusting becket. I truly didn’t think it was enough to keep them apart with the connection they had. So that was difficult for me. Overall I’d still recommend it.

Gritty and authentic
Revisado: 06-30-23
As a trauma therapist and nature lover I fell in love with this book. The raw prose and vulnerable emotionality was beautiful and at times cringy in the best possible way. I’d read anything by this author and I’ve already recommended it to my bibliophile friends. I plan to listen to it all over again and I’ve already purchased the hard cover so I can read the words over and over again. So many lines that hit hard for me in my line of work and personally. Looking forward to losing myself in it again. Ps: also loved the narration. It was flawless.
