good writing, bad message

First I will say the author is a decent writer and the narrator did an excellent job. I listened to the entire series, hoping the MC would see that she needs help for her addiction. She did not. In fact her drug use is glorified and unapologetically a major part of the story. Whenever the MC feels any emotion that is slightly uncomfortable, she takes drugs. The author spends way more time talking about how good the drugs make her feel than any slight negative side effect. As someone who teaches teens, and sees the negative effects, including overdose and death, this book sends the wrong message. Today's young adults have enough difficulty processing emotions as it is. Teaching them to avoid their emotions with drugs, which is the message in this book, is wrong.

The tone of the narrator's nonstop over-the-top creaky snark voice makes this book difficult to listen to. I started then stopped listening to book series 3 times. I almost always finish a book/series once started, but I made it about half way through this one before I decided it I just can't stand it any longer.

I only write reviews when compelled by the very best or the worst books. Unfortunately, this is the latter. The writing is clunky and I often found myself cringing and considered returning the book. To put that in perspective, I have listened to somewhere between over 800 audiobooks and have only considered returning 2 others. There were background story details that made no sense or seem contradict each other. The MC is an idiot. Over and over again the MC makes obviously poor decisions because of a nonexistent urgency or because she thinks there is no choice when there are...you know what, I could go on and on. I gave the book a chance and heard it out to the end but I am glad it is over and will not be continuing the series.

Give it a chance!

I read a few negative reviews but decided to give this book a chance anyway. I'm glad I did. The story does go back and forth following different characters, but each of their stories is compelling and they are tied to each other. This becomes clearer as the story developes. As for the negative reviews about sex scenes, there are three short medium-heat sex scenes... get over it prudes! The story has an epic feel to it and I'm interested to see where it goes in the next book.

Not worth your time

This book was a waste of time. The plot development was weak and the character development weaker. The book is short but somehow the author squeezed in a ridiculous number of sex scenes and those also weren't written well. The narrator stumbles over words, fails to annunciate, and is difficult to listen to.

This is a beautifully written story, the best I've read in a while. I found myself listening in every spare second until I reached the end.
