Historia
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

Unsung hero series
Revisado: 04-28-25
I grew up knowing about the 3 astronauts in Apollo 11 and we all see the launch. The lunar lander is often overlooked as part of the package. This is an excellent recap on how it came about and who was behind making it happen. I highly recommend it.

Historia
In this novel of the glittering and gritty Jazz Age, a young aspiring photographer named Dorothea Lange arrives in San Francisco in 1918. As a newcomer - and naïve one at that - Dorothea is grateful for the fast friendship of Caroline Lee, a vivacious, straight-talking Chinese American with a complicated past, who introduces Dorothea to Monkey Block, an artists’ colony and the bohemian heart of the city. Dazzled by Caroline and her friends, Dorothea is catapulted into a heady new world of freedom, art, and politics.

Know the past as a guiding light
Revisado: 03-09-25
While I am not in for novels, history baked in a semi fictional story takes it to another level. Before reading The Bohemian, I spent a few hours doing a mini search to avoid dissing facts or subscribing to fiction as fact. Fortunately the author (unlike her previous book: The Song is a Captive Bird), explains the premise behind each character, a brief on their life, and where real or fictions names were used. It’s an excellent read/listen.

Historia
All through her childhood in Tehran, Forugh Farrokhzad is told that Persian daughters should be quiet and modest. She is taught only to obey, but she always finds ways to rebel - gossiping with her sister among the fragrant roses of her mother's walled garden, venturing to the forbidden rooftop to roughhouse with her three brothers, writing poems to impress her strict, disapproving father, and sneaking out to flirt with a teenage paramour over café glacé. During the summer of 1950, Forugh's passion for poetry takes flight - and tradition seeks to clip her wings.

Making history immersive with a dash of fiction
Revisado: 02-28-25
The author masterfully takes a real biography that may be of interest to say a limited group of people and fictionalizes it to reach a wider audience. It is really about the times then and now and the struggle for equity explained thru a familiar character with a beautiful mind.

Historia
In the first of three essays included in this audiobook, Bill Bryson decides to move his wife and kids back to his homeland, the United States, after nearly two decades in Britain. But not before taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. The result is a hilarious social commentary.

Outdated

While I enjoy listening to Bryson’s audio books, this one e was severely outdated. His going through Europe in the 70s or views on British behavior in the same time frame must have been fun to listen to in its hay. I would suggest listening to his other works like Shakespeare or Home which are historical and o e is bound to learn something.

What can the United States do to help realize its dream of a peaceful, democratic Middle East? Stephen Kinzer offers a surprising answer in this paradigm-shifting book. Two countries in the region, he argues, are America's logical partners in the 21st century: Turkey and Iran.

Brief and informative
Revisado: 08-06-24
This brief covers a good range of parallels between Iran and Turkey along with differences. Similar to other publications shinning light on unfair practices in US foreign policy and alliances, it falls short in outlining the penetration of Zionism in US law making body. It appears what is called “US foreign policy” is heavily dictated by foreigners with US citizenship. This does not take away from the content of this book, rather suggest further readings (Overthrow and The Brothers by the same author).

Historia
In the rich turbulence of English history, one day stands magnificently apart: June 15, 1215, the day of the signing of the Magna Charta. On this day, the first blow for English freedom was struck and forever affected the Western world. Here is the story of three true men, Stephen Langton, Williams Marshall, and Hubert de Burgh, whose heroic deeds are set against those of the ever deceitful and crafty King John.

The main point should be “what Magna Carta was” and not romanticizing it by alluding to its positive influence in America and ignoring the atrocities that happened in establishing America. The author could have been more thoughtful about finding a better landing.

Historia
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

You can rely on the author for a well linked set of factoids. Very much recommend it to those who like to know the details without a sense of being in favor or against the commercial roots of the holiday. Enjoy.

Historia
Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft. With the help of the "muckraking" press, Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats.

It’s a well written narrative in form of a novel and provides for a great listen. I suggest reading both David McCullouh and Stephen Kizner’s “The True Flag” to take some of the romance out.

A Story That Repeats Itself

This book perhaps best read after "The True Flag" by the same author. It's a recap on the foundation upon which our country assumes a right over resources of other countries. It is invariably presented to the nation as "national security".

Historia
How should the United States act in the world? Americans cannot decide. Sometimes we burn with righteous anger, launching foreign wars and deposing governments. Then we retreat - until the cycle begins again. No matter how often we debate this question, none of what we say is original. Every argument is a pale shadow of the first and greatest debate, which erupted more than a century ago. Its themes resurface every time Americans argue whether to intervene in a foreign country.

American policies don’t seem to change!
Revisado: 06-09-24
As usual, the author outlines what we do not include in our high school and college academic courses. Our books provide a romantic view of Roosevelt and gloss over McKinney to the point of not being remembered. His name only appears when someone recounts presidential assassinations. This book is an excellent read to balance out our misconceptions.
