Too much dry exposition

Author seems to be dragging this series out. Too much of the book is spent explaining new facts about the world or ways that the magic works. While the book is narrated well, the pacing is terrible, and there are many opportunities to liven up the world-building that are simply missed or ignored, in favor of dry internal monologues by the MC. Character development is slow, the plot has bloated to include new characters, settings, and radical new concepts that make it difficult to remember what the core conflict is about.

Epic length seventh entry in an open-ended series

That's not a mistake. This book is almost 47 hours long, nearly three times as long as the longest of the preceding books. If it weren't For the narrator, this might have been difficult to finish. I'm not personally a fan of the lengthy tutorial sessions forces upon both the protagonist and the listener, and prefer to skim through the longest sections of prompt-text. however, there is plenty of story and action aside from all of that, and all if the characters continue to grow and change.
The protagonist remains an emotional, greedy, chauvinistic narcissist, but he is self-aware enough to know that he's flawed.
There's a lot of big questions answered in this book, sure to delight fans, but just as many more come cropping up, and the end is a definite cliffhanger.

This second in what appears to be an open-ended series of TRPG-inspired stories still smacks of rampant MC-favoritism, but it's at least not quite as disappointingly trite as the first.
Yet again, the narrator improved the experience, and continues to be the most enjoyable part.

This book started out interesting but partway through it began feeling very cliche. MC has too many things go his way to easily.
At least it isn't a harem book.
Narration is the real attention of this book. I plan on looking for others read by him.

Another case of a social awkward makes lead landing in a situation where he's the only male among supernaturally beautiful and sexually active women. only the performance is worth the time and credits spent.

Story can't live up to it's potential

There's a great concept world here but the story adheres to strictly to it's RPG roots. MC claims to have been an EMT but except for one scene in the first book, that's just lip service to explain why the character isn't morally bankrupt.
Author has a bad habit of overusing and abusing turns of phrase, to the point that a drinking game could be made from counting times used, such as "decidedly," "almost literally," and "nightmare fuel."
Possibly the worst offense of all, though, is the inclusion of side characters that are given an interesting backstory, and nothing else--they become a resource to be managed and nothing more.

Story takes way too long to get going, MC is thick as a brick and the last to know about anything happening to him.
The performance makes this book tolerable. The setting is interesting, and the author has clearly thought out ramifications of the decision to digitize an entire population, but takes an interminable about of time to get to the point. This entire book could be considered merely the Tutorial portion of an epic JRPG.

These books still contain a lot of repetitive text, but this second book is not as bad a the first. Also, there is slightly more time devoted to other characters' POV, including a rather dramatic back story.
