Historia
Ida Burton used to be Hollywood’s sweetheart until the best roles started drying up in her 40s. When Ida lands one of the leads in a big-budget lesbian rom-com, it's not only a chance at reviving her dwindling career. Maybe this movie can be an opportunity to finally burst out of the closet she's forced herself into. Faye Fleming has been at the top of her acting game and collecting awards for the past few years. When she's cast in a huge blockbuster opposite the legendary Ida Burton, she's over the moon.

Historia
Los Angeles in the 1960s: riots in Watts and on the Sunset Strip, wild weekends in Malibu, late nights at The Daisy discotheque, openings at the Ferus Gallery, and the convergence of pop art, rock and roll, and the New Hollywood. At the center of it all, one inspired, improbable, and highly combustible couple—Dennis Hopper and Brooke Hayward—lived out the emblematic love story of ’60s L.A.

Such a Great Slice of LA History
Revisado: 04-07-23
The story was well written with a good amount of history. It made me want to open Spotify and listen to all the great music that was happening at the time and Dennis Hopper and Brooke Hayward were at the cross-section of a lot of this music, the art scene, movies, fashion snd do much more. I enjoyed being back in the 60’s!

Historia
Los Angeles in 1974 exerted more influence over popular culture than any other city in America. Rock Me on the Water traces the confluence of movies, music, television, and politics in Los Angeles month by month through that transformative, magical year. Ronald Brownstein reveals how 1974 represented a confrontation between a massive younger generation intent on change, and a political order rooted in the status quo. Brownstein shows how the voices resistant to change may win the political battle for a time, but they cannot hold back the future.

A Fun Read for History, Film, TV and Music lovers
Revisado: 05-26-21
I recommend this book and it’s a flowing and informative read. I stopped to listen to music, research people and to watch a few old shows. Lots happened at an interesting time. And these creators influenced a generation and then some! Refresh. Learn for the first time. Enjoy the knowledge and info.
Will listen to a few chapters again as they were so compelling and involving bands and shows I liked!

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

We ALL Have so Much Work and Learning
Revisado: 06-12-20
I got this book a little over a month ago and it was in my queue but I moved it up. It just needed to be read now.
At first I was uncomfortable about the author being a white woman but as I went thru the book, I realized as a white woman, I get everything and every example as I have lived in an all too white world.
Many of my thoughts now take on a deeper or wider view. Example, feeling like I am not a racist. I get the danger of thinking or ever saying this out loud now.
I am here to listen and learn and this is one of a number of books that I have read on racism, social justice and American History and there are many others that I will dig into soon.

Historia
In 2001, when Jacqueline Novogratz founded Acumen, a global community of socially and environmentally responsible partners dedicated to changing the way the world tackles poverty, few had heard of impact investing - Acumen’s practice of “doing well by doing good”. Nineteen years later, there’s been a seismic shift in how corporate boards and other stakeholders evaluate businesses: Impact investment is not only morally defensible, but now also economically advantageous, even necessary.

A Good Read to Inspire Change
Revisado: 05-18-20
I found ‘Manifesto’ a quick and easy read. Many case-like stories that help make the point. A very global look and how to address big challenges and come together to make change. Good for the person thinking about how to help their immediate community or their country.
A good dose of inspiration!

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

Was happily surprised!
Revisado: 05-06-20
I liked this book so much more than I anticipated. And I’m grateful it took me by surprise. It’s not normally the kind of book I read but it was easy to just glide through. Short chapters. Peppy stories. It all felt real and honest. Timely. Little kernels to chew on. Why not celebrate life, love, change and personal growth.
It’s much better with Glennon’s voice in your head vs another reader.
Each chapter wraps a little to near for me, but I will take what I need from this book and that is the gift!

Historia
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America - Read it!
Revisado: 12-31-16
To understand America and especially after the election of Donald Trump, White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America is a must read. The history of our country is not long, but we continue to struggle with class and race. This book is a fairly linear look at where we started and how we got to this point, still having such severe hate issues stemming from race and class struggles. I wish every Trump voter would read this book, and Trump himself. It's the 'white trash' in America that needs to look inside their situations and help make this country less divided. Own your history white Americans and make changes before we drive this country into the ground.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.
