As an avid lover of Greek mythology, I found great joy in this novel. The story was very interesting on its own, but the navigation through the limitless myths was so smooth. The author included great explanations of how things change and evolve amongst the gods and their roles. Explanations were provided that reconciled differing versions of the same myth. Just sorting out the order of such a complicated story is an accomplishment. I would even recommend this book as a beginner’s guide to Greek mythology. I can only think of one mistake (Prometheus instead Hephaestus freeing Athena from Zeus’ head), but it is forgiven when so many other common mistakes were remedied. Very impressed. This is my favorite book by Saint.

I really enjoyed this trio of novels. It is perhaps the most thorough and effective feminist retelling of Greek myth, in my opinion. I appreciated the different goddesses intertwined with each book too. Very well done. Now one of my favorites.

Quite a compelling reimagining of Medea

In all my studies and reading of ancient myths and sources, Medea is painted as thoroughly evil. I really enjoyed the strategic creative license the author took in making Medea’s actions a bit more understandable. Some acts are undone, while others cannot be undone. I find it makes her even more complex. For I always held a little bit a faith in Medea; the gods did frequently side with her after all the horror she supposedly committed. Perhaps like many Ancient Greek myths, the common understanding of Medea’s story unfairly shines in favor of the men and casts the women in shadow. I really enjoyed this retelling. And by the way, for lovers of Madeline Miller’s Circe, this novel stands strongly on its own or makes for a nicely intertwined companion novel. I look forward to Eilish Quin’s next novel.

Interesting twist to a Trojan War story

I enjoyed the characters that were built in this retelling. And I appreciated the Luwian and Hittite influences, which are much more academically appropriate for Troy, instead of the seemingly Greek(-ish) city so often depicted in modern stories. I liked the combination of two Andromaches into one; it surprisingly makes sense. I will say it was a slow start. And while we know that Troy falls, I did feel that the story leaves the reader with unanswered endings and questions. I wish the end was better fleshed out, but I still found the novel worthwhile.

A lovely ode to sisterhood

I really enjoyed this grand story, interweaving various myths into one narrative. It is a love note to having sisters, to knowing your truth, and sharing your story. The author wrote very articulately, often forcing me to look up new words. I appreciated the author’s adherence to mythological canon and ancient sources, despite the occasional flare of artistic license. I will say I was thrown by the twist involving a certain goddess. It was…interesting nonetheless! I did find Euryale insufferable, but that is part of the story. I look forward to more works by this author.

I have consumed all the modern retellings of ancient Greek stories, many of which focused on the house of Atreus. I would have thought this story was overdone, and the new author was late to the game and likely wouldn’t provide anything new. WRONG. I was very impressed with her writing style and storytelling ability. I felt this story was finally given the proper shifted perspective it deserves. All the other retellings I’ve read always missed the mark ever so slightly. But Casati exceeded my expectations and provided a true and fresh feminist retelling. I look forward to her next creation.

I love the author’s eloquent writing style, and the story is a cunning spin on the usual mythology narrative. There’s a little mystery, a little espionage. I especially enjoyed how all the women of the book powerfully subvert their expected gender roles. Well done. Looking forward to the next installment!

A fantastic reworking of the classic myth

Personally, I am a big fan of the supernatural and fantastical elements of ancient Greek myth. But I was pleasantly surprised that this realistic retelling of the story stuck with me. I loved how the story and all it’s mythological details were so deeply rooted in reality, making it so much more plausible and digestible. It is beautifully written from the perspective of three characters whose stories always ran parallel to Perseus’ but were also disregarded in favor of his. This book gives these women great strength, power, and honor. Now, to me, /they/ are the heroes of this story. Well done!

Feminist retellings of Greek myths are my favorite genre, but this just doesn’t live up to the caliber I’ve come to expect. The writing and the narration leave many of the characters, both mortal and immortal, to be highly annoying and insufferable. So much time is spent having characters whine and rant rather than explore the minutiae of more delicate emotions or even more aspects of the actual story. These are characters I’m supposed to sympathize with or, at the very least, respect. But I’m left cringing at the childish characterizations. Definitely a missed opportunity.
