Strangely Powerful
Revisado: 04-09-24
This book does an incredible job of laying the biblical framework of the mission of the church and the church’s central responsibilities amongst differing visions. Kindly corrects and incorporates popular views that have less biblical warrant. Great for anyone in ministry, philanthropy, seminary, etc. Strangely powerful message

Historia
David Bell emphasizes the astonishing sense of human possibility that Napoleon represented. Bell emphasizes the importance of the French Revolution in understanding Napoleon's career. The revolution made possible the unprecedented concentration of political authority that Napoleon accrued. Without the political changes brought about by the revolution, Napoleon could not have fought his wars. Without the wars, he could not have seized and held onto power. Though his virtual dictatorship betrayed the ideals of liberty and equality, his life and career were revolutionary.

Entertaining, illuminating, and a wonderful narrative. Surprised it read so well. I was worried Bell wouldn’t be critical of Napoleon. He mixed it in perfectly without be preachy or overly sympathetic

Historia
Part noir, part psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon - Private eye Doc Sportello surfaces, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era. In this lively yarn, Thomas Pynchon, working in an unaccustomed genre that is at once exciting and accessible, provides a classic illustration of the principle that if you can remember the '60s, you weren't there. It's been a while since Doc Sportello has seen his ex- girlfriend. Suddenly she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with.

Top 10 worst novel I’ve listened to or read. Typically the book is better than the movie that follows but I have my doubts on this one

Historia
Don Quixote, the world's first novel and by far the best-known book in Spanish literature, was originally intended by Cervantes as a satire on traditional popular ballads, yet he also parodied the romances of chivalry. By happy coincidence he produced one of the most entertaining adventure stories of all time and, in Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, two of the greatest characters in fiction.

Helpful for those suffering loss. Deeply moving. A sad but hope-filled song. I’d be surprised if this goes out of print 100 years from now

World-renowned Christian philosopher. Beloved professor. Author of the classic Lament for a Son. Nicholas Wolterstorff is all of these and more. His memoir In This World of Wonders opens a remarkable new window into the life and thoughts of this remarkable man. In This World of Wonders is the story of a thoughtful and grateful Christian whose life has been shaped by many loves - love of philosophy, love of family, love of art and architecture, love of nature and gardening, and more. It’s a lovely, wonderful story.

Beautiful and Insightful
Revisado: 01-02-23
Great reading. Even better writing. Wolterstorff is part of the analytic philosophical tradition which as a whole can be cumbersome and difficult to dive into. In this book Wolterstorff gives you access to his thinking across his entire career in a way that is easy to understand. His story is tragic and beautiful. I absolutely loved this book and wish more great thinkers in the arts and sciences would copy him. Deep truths are so much easier to digest and remember and enjoy in a narrative format. This is an instant classic for sure

What is it that you long for? Dream about? Hunger after? We all desire more than just the endurance of our daily routines. But often we feel limited and stuck - like we're merely existing instead of living. That's not the way it was meant to be. God intends the humanity in each of us to be deeply experienced, lavishly enjoyed, and exuberantly celebrated. In fact this is what the Gospel is all about. Yes, the Gospel.

Insightful & Delightful
Revisado: 12-01-22
Superb writing and recording. Encouraging work that both instructs and delights. Author doesn’t preach at you but comes along side and walks you through avenues of life and points out how everything we experience - the good and bad - takes on different colors and meanings when you come to know the author of life, Christ Jesus. For the discouraged, the bored, the empty, the busy bee, this book is for you. The vibrant writing embodies the message and it is life-giving

Historia
For many centuries, the world of Islam was at the forefront of human achievement: the foremost military and economic power in the world, the leader in the arts and sciences of civilization. Christian Europe, a remote land beyond its northwestern frontier, was seen as an outer darkness of barbarism and unbelief from which there was nothing to learn or to fear.

Production Company Omitted Key Paragraphs
Revisado: 11-09-18
The author’s proposed solution and answer to the question “What Went Wrong?” is omitted from the narration. Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this. The two missing paragraphs are at the end of the book, on the very last page, and the production company left it out of the narration.
Although there are later editions to this book, the main text was not revised. The later editions do list an Afterword in light of 9/11, which is excellent. But the main text was not altered according to copyright section. That the production company left out perhaps the most important paragraph of the book is mind boggling. The solution the author proposes involves the lack of freedoms in such societies/states.
Anyway, this is not an easy read or listen. Thankfully it’s short. In fact, I found it so difficult - due to style, my lack of familiarity with Islam, and all the terms thrown around - I set it aside half way through. Two weeks later I finished it and I’m very glad I did. A brilliant and balanced analysis.
