Historia
Anomaly examines the prospect of an alien intelligence discovering life on Earth. The technological gulf between humanity and the alien species is measured in terms of millions of years. The only way to communicate is using science, but not everyone is so patient. Humanity's first contact with an alien intelligence is far more radical than anyone has ever dared imagine. With a technological gap of millions of years, mankind is barely able to recognize the arrival of an alien space craft outside the gates of the United Nations in New York.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

terrible lecturer
Revisado: 04-12-22
His reminded me of an engineering class I had, where the professor recited his textbook from memory in a dry monotone. He put the lecture hall to sleep in ten minutes flat. This lecturer appears to aspire to the same goal. It's a shame because the subject matter is endlessly fascinating.
For a better delivery of ancient history I highly recommend Bob Brier on ancient Egypt!

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

If I wanted politics I would watch the news...
Revisado: 12-29-21
...it's actually a good novel, well-performed. However, the national politics editorializing does absolutely nothing for the story. in fact it serves as a major distraction in my mind.
I still recommend the book, but buyer beware that you may well be offended by portions of the book, especially since the "news" referenced in the book is not consistent with present day knowledge of what actually transpired.

mixed bag
Revisado: 07-21-21
The narrator's performance is good as usual, but I feel like there should have been a lot more "real" story and a lot less "dream story". I know that would have meant giving the characters knowledge they didn't have at the time "Serenity" takes place, but the way the book is put together it just feels like it's missing a plot. At least give us the interactions with Badger afterwards, or a note from him, or something.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

What a story. Ably narrated by Simon Pebble, this book follows the trials and tribulations of the Shackleton expedition 1914-16. The book is aptly named, as the members of the expedition perform feats of endurance impossible to fully comprehend in modern times. Truly an inspiration to us all!

"Welcome to the Pelaran Alliance...." With those simple words, the Guardian spacecraft openly revealed itself to humanity, heralding a new chapter in its 500-year-long mission to cultivate our world. Earth's population must now make its first planet-wide decision - join the most powerful alliance in our galaxy or chart our own course, deciding for ourselves which civilizations are worthy of our trust. Will we be the first world to decline the Pelarans' invitation, or does their offer come with an implied threat?

Really just the second act...
Revisado: 03-10-21
This reads like the middle chapters of a novel. Shame on the publisher for spreading the story over multiple books like this. A better edited ~15 hour presentation of the entire story would have been far preferable. I like the overall story, and the writing is decent for the most part, but it doesn't deserve this kind of fragmentation.
The narrator does a good job with the material, but to echo other reviews, it is incredibly verbose and repetitive at times. If you can get it on sale or free, go for it, but don't pay full price, unless it's an omnibus edition.

Good series, but opener ends too early
Revisado: 03-07-21
A good read, ably narrated, but the cliffhanger ending is lame. A good series opener resolves a main plot, while leaving overarching plotlines to be developed. This book just ends mid-stream.

Historia
Sasha, a young computer programmer from Leningrad, is driving north to meet some friends for a nature vacation. He picks up a couple of hitchhikers who persuade him to take a job at the National Institute for the Technology of Witchcraft and Thaumaturgy. The adventures Sasha has in the largely dysfunctional institute involve all sorts of magical beings - a wish-granting fish, a tree mermaid, a cat who can remember only the beginnings of stories, a dream-interpreting sofa, and many more.

just ok
Revisado: 02-22-21
Perhaps some of the humor was lost in translation. There are parallels to the Unseen University and Discworld (though this book of course predates that series), but Pratchett's comic talent is far better. I caught some of the dogs at the old soviet system, but probably not all. The narrator did a fantastic job both the voices, leaving little doubt as to who is talking. For me, it got to be a slog by the last third of the book. I'll still try another book by the authors. Maybe their other works will speak to me more.

I've read the book in print before, so I knew going in I'd enjoy the story. I was a little apprehensive about someone other than Buck Shirner reading a Bob Lee Swagger novel, but the new guy (Jon Lindstrom) was just as good. I highly recommend this audiobook edition!
