Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

I love this book. It has a great mixture of action, humor, and introspection. It's need heaven, but even non-RGP player readers can enjoy this novel.

Historia
Miss Julie is probably the most famous play by the Swedish playwright August Strindberg, one of the founding fathers of naturalistic theater. In this claustrophobic drama, the interplay between social order and individual identity is explored in great detail. At the end the aristocratic Julie, goaded by her manipulative manservant, John, is faced with the ultimate decision: independence or annihilation.

Historia
The science fiction genre has become increasingly influential in mainstream popular culture, evolving into one of the most engaging storytelling tools we use to think about technology and consider the shape of the future. Along the way, it has also become one of the major lenses we use to explore important philosophical questions. The origins of science fiction are most often thought to trace to Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, a story born from a night of spooky tale-telling by the fireside that explores scientific, moral, and ethical questions that were of great concern in the 19th century - and that continue to resonate today.

This is a great survey course to understand both philosophy and sci-fi, the big questions they both tackle, and where the individual & society have their interplay.

Historia
When a listless office employee (the narrator) meets Tyler Durden, his life begins to take on a strange new dimension. Together they form Fight Club - a secretive underground group sponsoring bloody bare-knuckle boxing matches staged in seedy alleys, vacant warehouses, and dive-bar basements. Fight Club lets ordinary men vent their suppressed rage, and it quickly develops a fanatical following.

The prose are amazing
Revisado: 02-27-24
This is a great story about people giving into the egotistical cult behavior to deal with their dissatisfaction in society. This novel portrays the gravitational pull of charismatic figures so well, that some people miss the point completely. Surrendering yourself completely to figures that seem free and offer freedom at the price of complete obedience and loss of critical thought is just another form of oppression. It's better to deal with personal and societal problems honestly and constructively. It's easier to destroy than build.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

A great biography with such detail and fluid arrangement. The audio, however, suffered from noticeable edits that didn't have as seamless of an interjection. The producer and/or sound engineer really dropped the ball. The narrator was good otherwise.

Historia
By the time Rock Hudson's death in 1985 alerted all America to the danger of the AIDS epidemic, the disease had spread across the nation, killing thousands of people and emerging as the greatest health crisis of the 20th century. America faced a troubling question: What happened? How was this epidemic allowed to spread so far before it was taken seriously?

A pandemic that could've been avoided
Revisado: 06-20-23
This book not only chronologicals those who suffered and died from AIDS, but shows how indifference and prejudiced mindsets creates deadly prejudiced policies. The fact that the disease first plagued mostly homosexual men in the early years, meant people and institutions didn't care that a deadly transmissible virus was on the loose. Not only does this book detail the history of a US societies lack of forethought, but also, it shows the deadly consequences of homophobia. The US was well equipped to stem the tide of the AIDS epidemic, which could have been one of our finest moments. Instead, all the way from the federal government down, prejudice and the fear of repression created a perfect storm to build. That storm has killed and caused the suffering of countless people.
This is one of the finest non-fiction books I've ever read and is a must read to understand the AIDS pandemic.

The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

Historia
Dunbar-Ortiz adroitly challenges the founding myth of the United States and shows how policy against the Indigenous peoples was colonialist and designed to seize the territories of the original inhabitants, displacing or eliminating them. And as Dunbar-Ortiz reveals, this policy was praised in popular culture, through writers like James Fenimore Cooper and Walt Whitman, and in the highest offices of government and the military.

In July 1995, San Jose Mercury-News reporter Gary Webb found the Big One - the blockbuster story every journalist secretly dreams about - without even looking for it. This is a great book to understand the conspiracy to fund the Contras with drug money
Webb did an amazing job of researching this topic and braving the criticism that followed from establishment media. This is a must read to gain insight into the disastrous consequences government foreign policies have when American communities are not considered important enough to consider what collateral damage this type of drug money scheme will cause.

Historia
In a seamless meshing of exhaustive research, brilliant synthesis and narrative élan, Simon Sebag Montefiore chronicles the life and lives of Stalin’s court from the time of his acclamation as “leader” in 1929, five years after Lenin’s death, until his own death in 1953 at the age of 73. Through the lens of personality - Stalin’s as well as those of his most notorious henchmen, Molotov, Beria and Yezhov among them - the author sheds new light on the oligarchy that attempted to create a new world by exterminating the old.

Revisado: 06-19-20
I've read other books about Stalin that were so heavy with detail that the overview seemed to get lost. This is a great book that gives proper detail to the times, but had personal accounts that give the book a more human and accessible narrative.
