Historia
T. R. Fehrenbach brilliantly delineates the contrasts and conflicts between the many Mexicos, unraveling the history while weaving a fascinating tapestry of beauty and brutality: the Amerindians, who wrought from the vulnerable land a great indigenous Meso-American civilization by the first millennium BC; the successive reigns of Olmec, Maya, Toltec, and Mexic masters, who ruled through an admirably efficient bureaucracy and the power of the priests, propitiating the capricious gods with human sacrifices; the Spanish conquistadors, and much more.

One of the Best History Books Ever Written
Revisado: 01-11-25
Insightful, informative, detailed and very well narrated, this book provides so much value in understanding not just Mexico, but Spain, Europe, and the World through century and millennia. Do not be intimidated by the length of the book. It provides more insights as a single volume than 100 books on the same topics I have read before!

Historia
Reporter Diana Marcum is in crisis. A long-buried personal sadness is enfolding her - and her career is stalled - when she stumbles upon an unusual group of immigrants living in rural California. She follows them on their annual return to the remote Azores islands in the Atlantic Ocean, where bulls run down village streets, volcanoes are active, and the people celebrate festas to ease their saudade, a longing so deep that the Portuguese word for it can’t be fully translated.

Not that interesting
Revisado: 11-08-23
Went to the Azores and was hoping to read an interesting book about the islands. Did not get hooked on the author’s personal story or romantic liaisons. To make things worst, narrator sounds like the kind of person that thinks a piece of garbage contains amazing poetry while speaking with an overbearing tone. Made it to the end by essentially just doing other things and not paying attention to most of the babbling. Maybe it was just not for me, I can understand others may like it (although I really struggle to understand why).

Historia
When Norman Eisen moved into the US ambassador’s residence in Prague, returning to the land his mother had fled after the Holocaust, he was startled to discover swastikas hidden beneath the furniture in his new home. These symbols of Nazi Germany were remnants of the residence’s forgotten history, and evidence that we never live far from the past. From that discovery unspooled the twisting, captivating tale of four of the remarkable people who had called this palace home. Their story is Europe’s....

Great book despite goldblum’s narration
Revisado: 01-19-19
Story is great. I just went to Prague and this book enriched the experience. Not even Goldblum’s atrocious narration managed to ruin it. By the way, somebody give him a TUMS. There were parts where it sounded like he needed to burp. When narrating children and women, he sounded like somebody just kicked him in the privates. Every Czech, German, and Hebrew word appeared to give him seizures. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE = just because someone is famous, it does not mean they will be good narrators (the opposite is more likely).
