it was fine, i really did not see a single moment of real human feeling in the whole thing. it felt so close to Alice and emotionally bare, but ended up being completely forgettable. a dramatic, female version of the movie splash, but not interesting.

this novel never really kills--the dilettante but yearning artist/mother turns monster Gaia/Demetre feels like such a promising idea, but the circumstances and the characters are so flipping uninteresting that when we get to the moment that's supposed to sing, it lands flat. i really didn't like nightbitch, but i did get a kick out of Jen

strongly connected with the father daughter narrative, and felt an incisive mind was collecting thoughts. felt didactic and myopic at times though

well if you want a novel, here's a novel. Dostoyevsky, hesitantly, felt bound to this book all his life, and it's clearly a hard thing to overleap. gorgeous, well performed, i loved it

I listened, and it filled the time, but it is not a big deal. Under-developed characters plus a quick/cliche resolution and there you go: a half-realized idea. if the characters had more heart, or the plot had more complexity, it would have worked.

well, it's a thriller with twists. It will also make you feel empty inside. I mean, great big poignant, human literature? no. Not on the Anna K. scale. But it's big and interesting and you listen to the whole thing.

READ OTHER FAULKNER BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS ONE.

This novel is obviously deserving of it's reputation of a great and difficult novel. The technique, though, is one that almost rejects the careful reader, let alone the listener. When listening you have to abandon the normal approach, you have to sit and *focus*--hard. It's a serious undertaking, but it is incredibly rewarding to experience the melodic rhythm of this recording. It exposes the strength and weakness of the experimental language Faulkner utilized: the words melt away from narrative, wandering into a rolling meter, and it is incredibly hard to follow. I was not sure what was happening half the time until I listened to the audio while also reading the text. Faulkner is a master of prose, no question, but definitely read his other work first. _As I Lay Dying_, _Sound & Fury_, his collected short stories, etc.
